On the other hand, wood has great tendency to be infested by pest and may further distribute it. Secondly, using plastics in the shipping supply chain is advantageous for the reason that tracking devices like radio frequency identification tags can easily fix these kinds of shipping containers. Thus, plastic-based shipping containers may reduce the consignments' loss in freight and in the shipment process. However, using plastics in shipping containers may have a number of disadvantages due to which some people raise their eyebrows when these kinds of containers are considered to use. Plastic-based shipping containers are extraordinarily costly as compared to the other kinds of containers. This is the main reason why widespread usage of plastic-based shipping containers is not possible. In addition, plastic containers used for shipping commodities are found to contain substances that are either contaminated or toxic thus being dangerous is used for packing food products.
Distribution Package (Retail Shipping Package): In the recent times, distribution packaging has taken the place of the three mentioned shipping containers due to the sustainability it provides. Almost every shipping company throughout the world is using this kind of packaging as it has made the life of importers so easy when it comes to packaging method. The distribution packages are mostly made up of eco-friendly material such as solid and corrugated fireboard. The main advantage of this kind of packaging is that it can be recycled and reused. This is the reason why it has been preferred by the shipping companies as an alternative to plastic-based, wood-based and paper-based containers. The high versatility and monetary flexibility provided by distribution packages has resulted in its widespread usage all over the world. In addition, distribution packages provide minimal automation expenses along with negligible labor and manufacturing costs. The shipping costs are also nominal for the reason that distribution packages are very low in weight. Other advantage of these packages is that they can be folded and kept aside for more usage in the future. One of the best things about these packages is that they can be customized to various sizes without any trouble. Also, their manufacturing does not involve any kind of harmful materials or chemicals. In addition, distribution packages have no sharp edges as found in other forms of shipping containers discussed above. Therefore, they can be handled with ease. Their durability, sturdiness and damage-free quality make them the best mode for shipping a number of different commodities. On the other hand, there are a number of disadvantages that are needed to be considered before selecting distribution packaging as the method of shipping commodities to other places. The biggest enemy of this type of packaging is water as the material used in its manufacture is exceedingly absorbent. In simple words, when distribution packages made of corrugated boards come in contact with water, they instantly become soggy, mushy and spongy. In addition, such packages can bend or scrunch up if subjected to pressure.
