Ruba Bridging the East and the West: Reclaiming the Old Eastern Tradition, Acquiring the Western Heritage At the age of sixteen, I have had the privilege of coming to attend my formal education in the United States. As a young student from Taiwan, I initially experienced discomfort and a loss of individuality as I become immersed in a totally different world compared to what I was used to. Unlike my Chinese heritage, American culture is directly in contrast with the values and character of Chinese society.

The individualist and self-sufficient character of American society is opposed to the Chinese heritage, wherein collectivism and cooperation is encouraged. Apart from contrasting values and character, another dilemma that I had encountered upon arriving in the U.S. was the language barrier. Coming to America at the age of sixteen presented a problem to me, since it became hard for me to learn and speak the English language fluently at a short time.

Problems of miscommunication and my development of low self-esteem as a result of my inability to speak the English language became a hindrance to the improvement of my personality and individuality.

However, over time, and twelve years later, I overcome the barrier that prevented me to develop myself fully -- that is, breaking the 'language barrier.' As I became more comfortable and familiar with the English language, I gradually created social ties with other people, participate in school activities, and, best of all, I was able to dream for a good life here in the United States.

Overcoming the language barrier and learning to be part of my new culture and society created in me a greater sense of my 'self,' and I now know where I'm headed to. And this direction is precisely what challenges me to pursue a degree in Economics at Duke University. I realized that I can utilize optimally my skills and knowledge of the Eastern and Western cultures in helping out with my family's manufacturing business in China.

By studying for a degree in Economics, I will be able to apply the cool temperament of the West and the fiery nature of the East in the world of international business. I have the advantage of knowing the proper way of doing business in China, as well as the temperament of individuals who grew up with the Eastern culture and character. I also have the privilege of learning the rudimentaries of American culture, which is an essential tool when conducting international business relations in the world market.

Bridging the gap between the East and the West is perhaps the most difficult task an individual who has interest in both regions has to do. I am proud to say that armed with a degree in Economics, I can accomplish the task of bringing modern business into the East while introducing the West to the Eastern traditional culture, thereby.
