Personal Statement

Confident and effective communication with customers, employers, and suppliers is a key asset for managers wishing to advance along with their organizations into 21st century. I have come to understand this truth, not simply from textbooks or from real life experience, but by seeing the way my knowledge gained in the classroom as an undergraduate majoring in communications and marketing has proved itself useful in the real world of commerce. A good manager must combine his or her intense quantitative scrutiny of a product's target audience when launching a new product, combined with a more intuitive sense of human and organizational needs to launch that product into a successful or an unsuccessful market position. By communicating a clear and worthwhile product message that reaches the customer and focuses upon the customer's needs, desires and aspirations, an organization can feel confident of more confident of the success or a potentially risky or dicey proposition. By gaining more in-depth knowledge of how to achieve such a result in a graduate program, I can become more confident of my success and the quality of the advice I give as a manager.

A seek to further my education in communication management with a concentration in the science of marketing communication to make myself a better asset to my future employers, and also to enlarge my own base of knowledge with the necessary tools to become the professional I aspire to become. After working in business, but still at a relatively early juncture of my managerial career, this seems like the ideal time to seek to enlarge my educational base. I wish to evolve into a critical as well as a creative thinker who is ready to face the future armed with my arsenal analytic knowledge combined with my personal, evolving knowledge of how to communicate to customers.

As an executive intern at Target, I gained an intimate appreciation of the importance of good communications with one's customers and with the public at large for success in managing a large, volatile organization such as Target. Target has shown a unique ability to brand itself as an upscale discount store. I believe the knowledge I gained from my experience at this corporation will be an asset to my fellow students in class discussion. Graduate study in communications management will provide me with the necessary intellectual and analytical tools to capitalize upon my experience that I learned at Target, hopefully taking some of my experiences at that successful enterprise and putting them to good use in other venues.

After completing my major in Marketing Communications at my university I worked for Sears as a Merchandise Analyst. This deployed both my communications and analytical abilities. Although the Sears Corporation has been less successful as of late in the marketplace than Target, I believe I functioned as an asset for the organization in the immediate locality I served. The experience I gained was invaluable in terms of understanding what products were desirable to certain consumers and at certain product venues, and was a study in contrast given that Sears is such an old American corporation, and Target is such a new 'success story.' Comparing Sears with Target was interesting and informative, and I look forward to attending school, and putting both of my comparative experiences at Sears and at Target into proper perspective.
