¶ … goal of modern research has been to try to improve overall nursing quality so that patients receive better care. A number of studies have focused on nursing behavior that can be improved to thus improve the quality of care patients receive. The recent discourse clearly illustrates a problem regarding nursing staff and the proper handling of tracking biological allografts. In the surgical field, one of the areas of safety that needs to be addressed is the tracking of biological allografts. This activity is a mandatory requirement of The Joint Commission. A number of the top cell and tissue banking organizations have understood the crucial need for appropriate labeling, and have thus worked on creating working labels that are easily read and recognized by nursing and physician staff (Brubakerm 2010). Zabel (2009) also discusses how the Transplantation Transmission Sentinel Network was established to help strengthen security and safety controls to improve the accuracy of graft...
The current system of tracking requires nurses to find and locate binders containing received biological tissue information from the manufacturer. If the binders are not in their specified location, the nurse fails to follow through with the documentation because of the busy nature of the surgical area. Grafts are then used and are not being tracked. This is a serious concern because of the lives that depend on the proper labeling to ensure that patients get exactly what they need when they need it (Bren, 2005). Mislabeling can ultimately result in potentially dangerous risks for patients.
Tissue Tracking and Patient Safety Tissue Tracking Systemic Tissue Tracking Deficiencies Remain a Serious Threat to Patient Safety Systemic Tissue Tracking Deficiencies Remain a Serious Threat to Patient Safety The Joint Commission established standards for the handling of tissues for allograft procedures in 2005 (Meeting JCAHO's new tissues standards, 2005). The three main areas of concern were creating a standardized process for handling tissues, investigating adverse events, and tracking the tissue from donor to
Some authors show that, contrary to the belief that health care professionals are less sensitive than the general public toward the manipulation of the body, they in fact have great difficulty in allowing action to be taken on the deceased donor, even actions as well accepted as transplantation. Various authors have reported that, as in the general public, knowing transplant patients has a parallel in the hospital setting, and
Confidential Information Case Study (Harvard Citation) Confidential information generally consists of non-public information about people or institutions that if it were to be disclosed, could be expected to place either the person or the institution at risk. These risks could be criminal in nature, but also could be civil liability, financial standing, employability, reputation or privacy. ("601" 2010) In most businesses, employees are strictly regulated as to what information can be disclosed
Taken in isolation, some of the new, minimally-invasive procedures are less expensive by far, when analyzed on a procedure-by-procedure basis, than previous significant surgical interventions, as demonstrated below: Procedure Cost Estimated duration of 'cure' CABG 5-7 years PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention 3-5 years Based on the above analysis, it would appear to be clear that a PCI is more cost-effective than CABG procedures. This may not be true when all costs are considered, however. The logic of
