Risen Poverty in the Nation's Young Families The rationale behind the study's purpose statement is focused on the number of families who are living in poverty today. Many of these families are young, and they are struggling to get by in a nation where it can be difficult to get out of debt and begin to move forward financially. When there are children in the mix and the parents do not have a lot of education, work experience, or life experience, things can become even more difficult.

As such, being "poor" is more than just not having money or material things. It is a way of life, and often addresses a combination of finances, social interactions, support networks, health, experience, culture, and education (Philippou, 2010). Once people are born into poverty or fall into it through difficult times, getting out of it can be highly difficult, especially for young families (Banerjee & Duflo, 2011).

One of the reasons behind this is that people who have children and families when they are very young often do not yet have enough education to secure jobs that pay comfortable, living wages. Because of a lack of income, there is a need to go back to school for more education. Unfortunately, having a family and needing to take care of children can stop a person from being able to go back to school because of constraints on time and finances (Banerjee & Duflo, 2011).

Because that perpetuates the cycle of poverty, it is necessary to break the cycle as soon as possible. Waiting until later in life to have a family makes sense, because a person can get more established in his or her career. However, it does not always work that way. Some people simply do not want to wait that long, or there is an unplanned pregnancy (Banerjee & Duflo, 2011).

There are also people who do not know how to get out of poverty, so they end up passing it on to the next generation, and that generation passes it along to the following generation, etc. Until the cycle is broken, nothing will change. That is why initiatives that can help young families stay out of poverty or get out of poverty are so important.

There are many ways one can improve a financial situation, but it is harder to improve other aspects of poverty such as a bad location for living, crime in the neighborhood, or a lack of education and health care (Philippou, 2010). Many people who live in poverty do not understand how to take care of themselves properly. They may not know how to shop for healthy foods they can afford, and they may have trouble with menu and meal planning, especially if they work long and/or erratic hours.

If they do not eat healthy and teach their children to do the same, obesity and other health problems can also become a factor. There are many more obese people in low-income groups than there are in groups with higher income levels, indicating that people in the lower-income group do not eat healthy overall (Banerjee & Duflo, 2011). This is not the only issue lower income people face with their health, but it is certainly one of the problems that can occur.

While there are no easy answers or quick fixes to the problem of poverty and how it is rising in the nation's young families, neither is it acceptable to sit back and do nothing at all. There are many choices to be made about how people can improve what they have and how they can work.
