After working in the clinical setting and gaining valuable firsthand experience, I have learned many things about my ability to provide qualified and competent nursing care to patients in need. My initial assessment of strengths proved to be mostly well founded, as I learned that character traits like patience and compassion can be parlayed into positive health outcomes when combined with a firm grasp of the necessary knowledge and skills. The organizational skills I have always prided myself on were also extremely useful in the clinical setting, as the ability to record, retain, and reapply information on the fly is essential during the course of a typical day of nursing duties. Communicating openly, honestly, and respectfully with fellow nurses, physicians, and patients was another example of my natural strengths becoming an asset during my clinical experience, because delivering quality healthcare services on a daily basis requires the collaborative effort of all parties involved.

I also found myself becoming slightly nervous and unsure when dealing directly with medical doctors, simply because I know that they have certain expectations and standards which must be met. Nonetheless, these weaknesses eventually improved as I spent more time in the clinical setting, spending time around other nurses and doctors, and seeing up close how my education and effort can be used to help patients recover from injury and illness.
My revised list of strengths would highlight the previously mentioned character traits, as well as my renewed commitment to pursuing education throughout my career. The experience working in a hospital alongside fellow healthcare professionals showed me that I can reach new heights simply by taking the right classes, earning my certifications, and continually expanding my base of knowledge. As for my weaknesses, I have strived to improve my delegations skills, by remembering that in the heat of the moment, all of us nurses and doctors are working toward the same goal. Communicating naturally with MDs is still a concern, but I am convinced that this problem will resolve itself with time, as I get to know the doctors as people rather than positions of authority.
