Dismantle the Deal?

The AMA defended the deal, stating that it is "good for patients and for the public" as the AMA can opt out of endorsing any product if it does not meet their standards. They also emphasized that the fees from the deal would be used for public healthcare initiatives and research programs.

However, an argument can be made in favor of dismantling the AMA-Sunbeam deal.

The primary concern is the potential conflict of interest that arises from the AMA endorsing Sunbeam's products. As a respected health organization, the AMA's primary responsibility should be to the welfare of patients and the public. By entering into a commercial deal with Sunbeam, the AMA does indeed risk compromising its objectivity and credibility (Nanda, 2002).

For instance, if a Sunbeam product were found to be defective or overpriced, the AMA might be less likely to criticize or warn the public about it due to their financial ties with the company. This could potentially harm the public's trust in the AMA and its recommendations.

Furthermore, the deal appears to violate AMA's own policies that state physicians should not place their financial interests above the welfare of their patients, and that they should not be influenced in their prescribing of drugs, devices, or appliances by a direct or indirect financial interest in a supplier.

Therefore, to maintain its integrity, uphold its own policies, and avoid potential conflicts of interest, it would be in the AMA's best interest to dismantle the deal with Sunbeam. However, if one wants to focus, instead, on the potential benefits to patients and the public that could arise from the deal, as well as the financial benefits to the AMA, then maintaining the deal could be seen as the better option. It depends upon which way the priorities swing. In my opinion, the integrity of the company should come first.
