The old classification system for psychological disorders only had two kinds, neurosis and psychosis with people suffering from neurosis experiencing anxiety and people with psychosis suffering from hallucinations. Now psychological disorders are categorized even further. The two selected are from the category of anxiety disorders. The first is PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder. The second is OCD or obsessive-compulsive disorder.

There are other classifications, the somatoform disorders and dissociative disorders. The three main symptoms of PTSD revolve around re-experiencing the traumatic scenario. The afflicted person will experience nightmares, upsetting memories, flashbacks, including feels of distress (Barlow, 2001). The person will also experience intense physical reactions like nausea, sweating, and pounding heart. They will also try to avoid any remind of the trauma.

For OCD, the main symptoms are repeatedly checking in on those that they love to see if they are safe, excessive double-checking of things including switches, door handles, and locks, and tapping, repeating certain words, counting, and washing hands in order to help them reduce anxiety. 2. Choose and describe two treatment options for psychological disorders. PTSD as well as OCD are long-term and debilitating disorders. However there are several treatment options for both.

Beginning with PTSD, talk therapy can be a useful tool for those suffering with PTSD to help them relive the past in a way that can help deal with the anxiety from the event. For example, CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy has been used to treat war veterans. Other options are CPT or cognitive processing therapy and PE, prolong exposure therapy. EMDR is a similar therapy standing for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing that may help along with SSRIs. CBT is also used for OCD along with several medications.

These medications are: Zoloft, Luvox, Prozac, Celexa, and Paxil. SSRIs are the first line of treatment in relation to prescription medication. If they do not help, doctors revert to another drug named clomipramine and was the first prescription medication used to treat OCD. Atypical antipsychotics can help when administered in low doses like Quetiapine and Risperidone (Antony & Barlow, 2002). The next treatment option for severe cases is psychosurgery and one of the surgeries is called anterior cingulotomy. 3.
