Reframing is a unique concept in today's global environment. Mangers, leaders and personnel must each envision corporate possibilities without geographic limits. They must now also be aware of potential global competition on the part of foreign entities. This presents an interest challenge in regards to framing as it involves looking at different events from varying viewpoints. This method is intended to eliminate any unwarranted biases in regards to organizational complexity. However, the viewpoints are so difficult to enumerate that the organization can become easily overwhelmed in its reframing process.
Upon reading chapter 20 of the text, I believe more information is needed in regards to organizing the large amounts of information garnered from the reframing process in order for the organization to use more effectively. Leadership is one component of chapter 20 that I believe merits much attention in regards to reframing. An important aspect that should have been given more attention in the chapter is that of motivation.
I agree with the author's analysis in regards to leadership, and the subsequent change in leadership as important function of the reframing process. I also agree with the authors in their belief that leaders are made and not born. Furthermore, I believe the authors are correct in the assertion that leaders, irrespective of positions can provide effective leadership to those in their immediate sphere of influence.
This is particularly true in regards to the symbolic frame as the leader is also a symbol of the overall company and those who interact with the brand, irrespective of position. However, more emphasis should have been placed on the factors that influence the leadership reframing process such as motivation. As the authors duly note, "…reframing expands choice by developing options." These options however can not properly manifest themselves unless personnel are properly motivated.
As personnel are now based in differing regions, management must be able to effectively motivate in order for the reframing process to properly work. This is important because in a more globally competitive environment, reframing options will depend primarily on the willingness and motivation of employees. In addition, in regards to the artistry component, I believe it prudent to discuss the changing dynamic of required skills within the work environment.
I agree with the author when he states, "… the emphasis on artistry rests on belief in the importance of using skills and imagination to create possibilities for beauty and enjoyment in organizational life.".
