In your view, how can Christians and Muslims work to understand one another better?
One of the first ways Christians and Muslims can work to understand one another is to recognize their shared heritage as "people of the book." Their religions are important to their identities and worldviews, and knowing this will also shed light on their common ground. Both Christians and Muslims believe in the veracity of the Hebrew Bible as the cornerstones of their religion. The common grounds between the two faiths, including the stories of the Old Testament, can be starting points for religious dialogue.
Once Christians and Muslims realize they are from a common background, they may be able to inspire compassion in one another. However, it is also important for Christians and Muslims to recognize and understand d their differences and more importantly, respect those differences. Valuing diversity, Christians and Muslims can appreciate that their world is complex. Both the Christian and Muslim worlds are diverse within themselves, and learning about the different manifestations of Christianity and Islam can help enlighten and inspire.
Finally, trust building is critical. It is important that Christians and Muslims value trust and build bonds between their communities through personal relationships. An exchange program or similar means by which to encourage cultural immersion might also help engender trust and respect for their respective faiths.
What is one significant question you still have about Christianity? What would you like to learn more about?
Christianity is a complex religion. It is difficult to pinpoint one single significant question I would have about the religion, because I have many that are related to theology, practice, and culture. I would ask what, besides the obvious belief in Jesus, distinguishes Christians from peoples of other faiths. In particular, I would like to learn more about the Eastern Orthodox faiths, which Americans tend to know very little about given the majority of American Christians are Protestant. I would like to know why Protestantism in America has become evangelical in nature and tone, whereas the Eastern Orthodox faiths seem less interested in proselytizing. I would want to know also what some of the key theological differences are between different sects of Christianity and how knowledgeable the average Christian is about these distinctions. Related to that, I would like to learn about personal religious practice and how Christians approach the diversity within their own community.
