There is much controversy with regard to the resurrection of Jesus and concerning whether or not it should be considered a sign in the Gospel of John. In order to determine if the resurrection should be considered a sign, one must focus on the set of details accompanying this particular event. The resurrection's significance, its purpose and the body that performed it all need to be taken into account so as for one to be able to gain a more complex understanding of the episode. The resurrection stands as a symbol for the concept of new life, as rebirth is one of the most important ideas that one can possibly think of when considering Jesus Christ.

When trying to address this topic, one needs to focus on the moment when Jesus walked on water and on the parallels between it and the resurrection. Keeping in mind that that Jesus' ability to walk on water is certainly a miracle, it is difficult to say whether it should actually be considered a sign. The resurrection was basically meant to have people realize how they needed to change much about themselves in order to be able to experience spiritual progress. Jesus' revival was the perfect strategy to have the world as a whole better acquainted with the power of God. While bringing Lazarus back from the dead was an extraordinary fact, bringing oneself back from the dead is a completely different matter, as it basically demonstrates how the power of the divine can reach beyond any barrier.
The three days that lasted between the moment when Jesus died and the moment when he was revived should play an essential role in making the resurrection one of the miracles.
