Planning a dissertation isn't like planning a small research paper. Often, dissertations are 100 pages or more, and they can take a very long time to put together. That's especially true if they're for a doctoral level degree, where they have to be defended in front of a committee...
¶ … right information and details, it will be essential that it is resented in the form of an academic paper and the format befits a dissertation that will be admitted into the academic library. In the pursuit to achieve these, I will have to work on a continuous basis with a committee that will be composed of several highly respected academicians and researchers, a situation that will almost inevitably present several challenges to me as a student defending my dissertation.
One of the foreseeable challenges in the process of working with the committee is the presentation of contradicting philosophies or comments on a single issue. This is possible where an approach to a given subject mater within the dissertation is viewed differently by two members or there are two different preferred ways of tackling an issue by two members of the dissertation committee (Jalongo R.M., (2008).
If and when this challenge comes up in the process of my dissertation I intend to give it two approaches, first I would strive to identify the chairperson of my dissertation and discuss the make up of the committee in order to have a consistency of ideology. It would not help to have a person who does not prefer quantitative approach to a given section yet the rest are in agreement in the use of the quantitative approach.
This striving to have a consistency in ideology or philosophy within the committee will help expedite the process. I will also endure to explain my philosophical approach to the committee for each section in a bid to align their approach to my dissertation. The other possible challenge is the situation where the different members of the committee give me different recommendations or correction on the same issue or same section.
This is almost expected since the committee is to provide me with various suggestions and among these various suggestions, there is possibility of having inconsistent views along the way. To handle this, I will first treat the different opinion form the first one as a second opinion that is meant to check that the first suggestion has no loopholes. I will take it as an opportunity to have a more critical look at the question or section that solicits contradictory suggestions.
This second critical look will allow me to find the fault that could be on my side for not having expressed the idea better in a manner that would not raise.
