Academic Accountability
Define academic voice and plagiarism.
Academic voice is a form of communication that uses a formal tone with clarity, professionalism, and straightforwardness. At its core are declarative statements, avoidance of causal language, and authoritative register (Dirgeyasa & Hum, 2017).
Plagiarism is the representation of another author’s work or ideas as own and without full acknowledgment.
Apply your knowledge of academic voice and plagiarism to the rewritten passage, locating and identifying errors.
“The correlational method can be very useful, but it must be used with caution.” - (this direct quote is done well, but there is no acknowledged through in-text citation, thus plagiarism). If knowledge of one variable (height) helps predict another (weight), does that mean that one causes the other? Not necessarily. It is possible that the primary variable caused the secondary, or that the secondary variable caused the primary, or that some additional variable caused both variables.…
Original research comes with the need to properly synthesize and paraphrase. There is often the need to present information, but in a way, that shows the reader the researcher understood the information collected. This means putting into ones own words what the literature stated. For example, if a research article discusses smartphone use affecting sleep in humans, and there is a long passage one would like to use, one can paraphrase that passage and put at the end, the last names of the writers of the article and date the article was created. This helps readers see that the article inspired this portion of an essay.
Synthesizing the research means allowing the research collected to inspire one to take a new direction and come up with ones own hypotheses and conclusions. Going back to the smartphone example, the research could reveal a gap in research concerning blue light emission and…

Thus, there is certainly room for me to improve in my overall knowledge of the American Psychological Association and its stylistic guidelines for communicating with others. One of the most significant points of insight for me after taking this quiz is that I can certainly improve my knowledge of the citation style for this writing system. There are so many different sources that one can utilize while writing research papers. Quite simply, I am not as fluent in the style required to cite these different sources as I could be. Another insight that I gained from this quiz is that there is actually an extremely fine distinction between plagiarizing and citing sources. Traditionally, I believed that plagiarism resulted in a conscious desire on the part of an individual to…

Preventing Plagiarism: A Detailed Action Plan
During the assignment writing process, the relevance of other people's ideas, views as well as opinions cannot be overstated. To come up with a concise and balanced research piece, one may be required to draw on the ideas of others from time to time. In this text, I come up with a plan detailing how I will prevent plagiarism in the rest of my program. More specifically, I highlight personal habits, resources as well as methods I will utilize to avoid plagiarism during the assignment writing process.

The most helpful resources that could help prevent plagiarism that were not mentioned might be explicit examples of actual student papers that demonstrate each one of the different forms of academic plagiarism. There is probably no need to provide samples of deliberate plagiarism, simply because everybody knows what it means to copy and paste text without any acknowledgment. However, other forms of plagiarism could easily happen without the student intending to violate the school's academic policy.
For example, it might not be clear from the materials provided exactly how to properly reference source material within a long paragraph containing several different points. Are we supposed to just use one citation at the end of the paragraph or a citation after every sentence in that paragraph? It might be very…

The book was based largely on the history of education reform in the U.S. In the 1960 through the early 1980s and outlined basic principles and rules that the authors present as fundamental keys to effective academic instruction in higher education. Those principles and rules emphasize direct contact between professors and their students, student collaboration instead of solitary work, active learning instead of passive learning, prompt feedback from instructors, time on task, the clear communication of expectations in advance, and both recognition and exploitation of the many different ways that different people learn best.
Avoiding Plagiarism
As an educational problem, plagiarism most likely dates back to the beginning. Plagiarism involves the failure to attribute one's sources for research. At best, this behavior indicates careless research. At its worst, plagiarism is nothing less than the theft of ideas.
This paper focuses on student plagiarism, which is becoming increasingly rampant in universities. It first defines different forms of plagiarism, and how these forms vary by degrees. The paper then looks at the different reasons why students resort to plagiarism. It then discusses proper citation and how students could avoid committing plagiarism in the first place. In the conclusion, this paper argues that given its capacity for individual and social harm, universities and colleges should take stronger stands in curbing this behavior in school.

Citing Quotes without Acknowledging them as Quotes
This form of plagiarism consists of citing the material as the ideas of another but neglecting to indicate that the cited material is actually quoted verbatim (iParadigm, 2010). A perfect example would be the following citation of the iParadigm material on this topic:
The writer properly cites a source, but neglects to put in quotation marks text that has been copied word-for-word, or close to it. Although attributing the basic ideas to the source, the writer is falsely claiming original presentation and interpretation of the information (iParadigm, 2010).
Unacknowledged eliance and Over-reliance on Sourced Material
Unacknowledged reliance on sourced material would be citing only the first paragraph of this section, "Examples of Proper and Improper Citation" as being derived from iParadigm without any subsequent citation for the rest of the section when those ideas are also derived from the same source. My peer successfully explains what plagiarism is, how it can be avoided, and the repercussions thereof. However, upon closer examination of the post, there are several issues that need to be addressed in order to make the arguments stronger and more comprehensible.
In the post, plagiarism is clearly defined and an explanation is given as to why it is important to cite resources. Additionally, it is argued that failure to cite and reference sources can lead to dissertation failure. The author of this post also provides a solution to ensure plagiarism beyond proper citations. This solution is to compare any work a student writes with previously published materials by running the paper through Turnitin, plagiarizing-detecting software. Avoiding Plagiarism and Self-Plagiarism in Academic Writing
Plagiarism can be defined as "copying another's work or borrowing someone else's original ideas" without properly citing or crediting the source from which the information was sourced (What is Plagiarism?, n.d.). However, there are certain things an individual may do to prevent plagiarism and ensure that he or she is not accused of academic or intellectual dishonesty.
In order to prevent plagiarism, one must first be able to recognize and be able to detect plagiarized material. The below passage is demonstrative of plagiarized work and does not properly cite the source material it references.

He offers what he believes is perhaps a more comprehensive method: collaborating (42). Clabaugh suggests assigning more than one student to a research assignment, and thereby creating a shared result of success, or, in the case of plagiarism, a shared responsibility and shared consequence (42). This is one suggestion, but it also deprives the student of individual success and credit. Also, Clabaugh's contention that electronic means of identifying plagiarism as being largely unsuccessful, would perhaps be disputed by the many universities and colleges and even professors who require students to submit their papers to those entities for electronic review before submitting the paper. The hope is that identifying plagiarism before the work is turned in to the professor would serve as a deterrent for that assignment, and for others if plagiarism is discovered.
Many colleges and universities also require that students submit writing samples, and those samples serve to demonstrate…

In return, it would hurt their creditability as well as the company's. If the creditability is hindered, it could mean loss in profits and eventually could cause the company to go out of business. Therefore, plagiarism is an unacceptable business practice.
Theft of intellectual property
Due to the unethical practices of plagiarism, it is considered as theft of intellectual property, which is a valid statement. Instead of stealing of someone's car or other material things, it is stealing their ideas and thoughts to claim ownership, which is still wrong because they belong to other people even though it is not a physical substance or object. Plagiarism should be a crime when it is completely intentional because theft is illegal. Clearly, this is theft of intellectual property and should not be practiced by any student or professional who is researching to write.

Furthermore, most academic institutions of higher learning maintain honor codes that must be upheld by all students as a condition of their matriculation at the institution.
Academic honor codes are formal representations of the student's acceptance of the terms established by the institution governing all elements of academic and social conduct associated with the pursuit of the degrees awarded by the institution. Therefore, by definition, every form of academic dishonesty (including but not limited to plagiarism) is necessarily a fundamental violation of the institution's honor code.

Ambrose does not use his own words and his own voice in these instances, for the writing still parallels too closely that of the original. In some cases, Ambrose's wording is identical. It is an egregious offence for a writer of Ambrose's caliber and reputation. It is difficult to imagine that Ambrose did not understand what he was doing or comprehend the serious nature of his actions.
According to an article in The Weekly Standard, Childers was gracious about Ambrose's copy-catting, remarking only that he was "disappointed" (Barnes, 2002). There were no comments from Ambrose reported, only a bit of side-stepping from his publisher, who praised Ambrose's work and insisted that all resources were appropriately documented. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Ambrose clearly plagiarized the work of Thomas Childers and, in so doing, forever tarnished his reputation as one of the nation's premier historians and writers.

The CBS Morning News Plagiarism story was shocking to watch, mainly because reputable professionals have stolen other people’s work and passed it off as their own for many years. Both the novelist and the journalist interviewed for the piece say that their plagiarism started small and was a “slow progression,” as one put it, or as the journalist said, a “slippery slope.” The piece briefly talked about the ways professors are trying to prevent plagiarism, such as by using TurnItIn.com. I totally understand why plagiarism is wrong. What I learned from the video is that it is more common than we believed. However, I do think that it is different to plagiarize music because that type of plagiarism is often unconscious. A melody or rhythm might be floating in our head and we unconsciously repeat it in a new composition, without realizing that the work is copied. The writers are…

Plagiarism is an issue throughout modern academia as well as in all realms of professional writing. Generally, plagiarism refers to any use of the writing or intellectual product of another person without acknowledging and crediting the original source of the information. Deliberate plagiarism consists of the purposeful use of work authored by another in an attempt to pass off writing that includes that work as being entirely the original work of the person using that information. Common examples of deliberate plagiarism include copying and pasting information from online sources and hand-copying written material from books and other hardcopy sources. However, plagiarism can also occur entirely unintentionally, and usually is the result of a genuine lack of understanding as to what types of use of research material requires referencing. Therefore, it is crucial for…
In principle, plagiarizing by paraphrasing can occur both deliberately, such as where the writer is fully aware that reproducing the ideas of another in different words without credit is plagiarism, as well as entirely unintentionally, such as where the writer genuinely believes that rewriting the material in all-original words is sufficient to make it original writing (Foster, 2007). As a general rule, the only types of information that do not require a reference are factual statements that are commonly known and purely historical facts that are widely available in reference works. Conversely, any opinion or analysis presented in original work must be credited to the author irrespective of what words are used to convey those ideas (Foster, 2007). One of the simplest ways that tutors, editors, and proofreaders can help writers avoid plagiarism is by asking them whether they are the original source of specific ideas and reminding them that any idea that comes from another person must always be credited to that person.
Conclusion
This article was tremendously helpful to me. I realized that I have, in the past, probably been guilty of unintentional plagiarism because I may have reproduced the intellectual ideas of others without crediting them appropriately because I was genuinely unaware that completely rewriting them so that all of the words were entirely original was not enough to make those ideas mine. This article taught me how important it is to continually ask myself whether every specific idea expressed in my writing is original or whether it represents someone else's ideas but in my original words. I believe that my understanding of the definition of plagiarism is now sufficient for me to avoid ever committing it unintentionally.
Student Plagiarism Online orld" Julie J.C.H. Ryan, book "The Conscious Reader, 12th edition"
Do Not Cheat
There are several valid points in Julie J.C.H. Ryan's article in The Conscious Reader, the 12th Edition -- "Student Plagiarism in an Online orld." The author's central premise, of course, is that the internet has made it increasingly easier for students to plagiarize and offer someone else's written material as their own. Another fundamental part of this article is Ryan's implication that plagiarizing is in and of itself wrong, and produces negative consequences for those who engage in it. A careful overview of Ryan's article reveals that the author is correct about the harmful effects of plagiarism so easily provided by the internet because it negatively impacts students who do not cheat, prevents those who plagiarize from fully understanding the format of academic papers, and feeds into the sense of entitlement that the instant…

Ethics and Plagiarism
A hort Analysis
The subject of ethics is one that is becoming less and less important in society today. As the world expands to encompass corrupt politicians, sketchy businessmen and lying religious figures as part of an unmistakable whole, linked by technology, one must, inevitably ask, where ethics is discussed or even recognized anymore. Despite the misconception that it is always a distant 'other' committing ethically questionable actions, this subject should be discussed closer to home. The remainder of this paper will thus focus on ethics as it relates to education, writing, and plagiarism.
The first topic to cover is an examination of what being ethical really is. According to one definition, "Being ethical is […] not the same as following the law. The law often incorporates ethical standards to which most citizens subscribe. But laws, like feelings, can deviate from what is ethical. Our own pre-Civil…

In that way, plagiarism is a complicated issue. I think we could begin, perhaps, to truly solve the problem of plagiarism in schools, colleges, universities, and elsewhere, by our society and mass media (e.g., television, films, Internet, etc.) expressing the idea that thinking for oneself is an admirable attribute, not a tedious waste of time or painful burden.

Avoiding Plagiarism
Often, writers may not properly cite original sources wherefrom they obtained ideas or phrases for a paper. Plagiarism denotes a case of an author portraying the intellectual property of another as one's own, original work. There are several forms of plagiarism; these include: absence of citations, copy-pasting a phrase/sentence from a source into one's own paper without changing, or inaccurate paraphrasing (Walden University, 2015).
An author must take great care to ensure that plagiarism is absent from his/her work. Once an author has published/handed out a paper, he/she cannot further influence readers regarding what has been penned. It is in the hands of reviewers or readers to decide whether a work is plagiarized. Authors should pay particular attention to ensure that no aspect of one's work raises questions.
One can identify plagiarism in a written work by: 1) ascertaining if the words and ideas are those of the…

Features of the APA Style: Avoiding Plagiarism
In academia, it is often said that professors and graduate students must publish or perish—in other words, writing published academic articles are very important for building an academic reputation. This means that being associated with new, important, and innovative ideas is vitally important to enhance one’s academic reputation. Out of respect for this fact, and to show professional honesty and integrity, it is important to give credit to people who have developed such new ideas. To steal ideas from an academic is to steal that academic’s livelihood. Even stealing from a graduate student or a layperson, is wrong, however, given the importance of ideas in establishing a professional reputation and credibility.
The APA style is useful, because it notes in the body of an essay, the name of the individual who authored the book, article, or other work who was the original author…
avoiding plagiarism, and integrating source material into the body of the paper (Hacker, 106). Each main challenge involves utilizing many steps, which combine to make a research paper a descriptive analysis of a writer's thesis. The steps involved include: finding a topic, researching the topic, finding sources that support the writer's main idea, outlining the paper, writing the paper, identifying the thesis, writing the thesis, and ensuring that all source materials are properly cited in order to avoid plagiarism.
In order to put a research paper together, the writer first has to find a topic and determine the general questions that he or she wants to answer in the paper. Having found a topic, the writer begins basic research so that they can further narrow the topic into one that can be addressed in appropriate detail in their particular paper. Research can be done in a variety of ways, the…

students, especially those in colleges and universities often come across the term "plagiarism" and the need to be careful of not plagiarizing is often stressed. Plagiarism is an act of stealing or copying something that is not actually yours and not crediting the person who wrote it or came up with the idea. Although this may not be considered that serious an offence, it should be noted that plagiarism is a serious offence for which one can be sued in certain countries. The American law states that anyone can be sued for plagiarism if the work they copied was copyrighted and serious action is taken in such instances (Foss, 2000). If the question put to the competitive intelligence team were, "how can we make a product that consumers want to buy?," and if this question were at the forefront of every action, there would be no need for unethical behavior. For an issue like product design, we would not need to try to copy another company's interface, but would instead study why that interface was popular with consumers, and attempt to emulate and accentuate those same features. The same principle applies in many other areas of competitive intelligence research; having a shred objective with inherent values is a great ethical motivator.

8). These students are excited about breaking the rules and the possibility of being caught or getting away with it. Whatever the reasons may be it is academically unhealthy for students to engage in plagiarism.
There are occasions when a student may unintentionally engage in plagiarism. There are essentially two types of plagiarism intentional plagiarism, which is an act of cheating and involves a deliberate attempt to deceive. These is also unintentional plagiarism where the student is guilty of a "misuse of sources" (Plagiarism: What is it? 2009, par.11). This type of plagiarism is accidental and often occurs where a student is unaware of the rules that govern citation as it relates to ideas. They student may also be sloppy in the use of quotation marks and in the act of paraphrasing. It should also be noted that there is a cultural component to plariagism, as writers from other cultural…

references out of those 300 or so books, but that some must have slipped through the cracks. Basically, she said that she was not equip for dealing with such high numbers of research materials and the long length of her book; isn't that her job as a historian?
Later, Goodwin herself admitted that her work had even more mistakes than were first discovered by McTaggart and the Weekly Standard, (Lewis 2002). She removed herself as a commentator from her weekly Television program as of 2002 in order to get everything together involving her situation with plagiarism. it'd obvious, to both her and the historical world which she worked, that her initial excuses regarding her negligence were not enough to save her career and her credibility. However misguided she was in 1987; she began a crusade in 2002 to attempt to regain at least some of her lost credibility. According to Forbes, she began withdrawing copies of her work in stores across the country, (Lewis 2002). She now is busy in reorganizing her work and correcting all mistakes and unreferenced material so that she can re-release her 900-page work back into the public's hands.
Despite her bestselling works which have not been questioned, Goodwin will forever bare the burden of the allegations against her 1987 novel. Before this broke out, she had even been a staunch advocate at punishing plagiarism after someone had taken material from her questioned work the Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys. This entire ordeal is a painful mark on the rest of her career. Her initial excuses do not release her from her obligations as a credible historian to check all her sources. Although her image is tainted, she is now at least attempting to rectify the situation. Her ordeal does go to show the extreme consequences of plagiarism, both monetarily as well as the plunge in one's credibility. One should take note of famous cases like Goodwin's and take extra precautions not to follow in her foot steps and ruin one's academic or professional career.

person steals the property or possession of another, the action is considered both a criminal and moral offense that if caught, the corresponding penalties are meted out. The matter is easily provable because what was taken is a tangible entity that provides solid proof of the usurpation. The issue becomes contentious when what has been stolen is intangible especially if these are original ideas, thoughts, designs and concepts. This then comes under the purview of plagiarism, a well-known offense not only in the academic circles but in the milieus dealing with intellectual property rights and copyright. Plagiarism should be differentiated from copyright though wherein "copyright is an area of civil and criminal law that prevents a series of uses of a qualifying creative work [while] plagiarism is a primarily ethical issue that centers around the dishonesty of claiming another's work as your own (ailey, 2011)." Nonetheless, plagiarism at its plainest…

brazenly 'sampled' from a book, the dictionary, and 'remixed' into a news story," writes Julian Sanchez in an annoyed response to court rulings on sampling in the music industry. His phrasing, however, perfectly encapsulates the real problems in defining and avoiding plagiarism. In the attempt to express my own personal understanding and interpretation of plagiarism, I quickly found that despite the most sincere attempt to develop such an interpretation was bound to failure. In a moment of sarcasm, I might express a fear of plagiarizing from the honor codes of universities across the nation if I were to merely parrot back the description of plagiarism which involves not only "using another writer's words without proper citation" (CACCAS) but also "using another writer's ideas without proper citation." (CACCAS), definitions which are used verbatim in student handbooks wherever English is spoken. The problem is more significant, however, than this flippancy might make…

academic environment students are under extreme pressure to turn assignments in on time as well and to get good grades on those assignments. Under these conditions students will often choose the path of least resistance or the easy way out and plagiarize from some document. In this essay we will briefly examine what plagiarism is and the challenges students face when attempting to avoid plagiarism. Ultimately it will be apparent that the majority of students plagiarize unintentionally and often to their great distress. While plagiarism is a serious concern, stemming the tide will require student education combined with institutional vigilance. Consequently, it is very difficult for untrained students to avoid plagiarism.
While there are many technical definitions of plagiarism, Academic Integrity (2011) suggests that plagiarism involves many variant and diverse types of behaviors. These behaviors range from the actual copying of text from another location for use in the students…

If this were to happen, legitimate students who use material honestly and properly cite all sources will be losing out on untold amounts of useful information.
There are several ways which would prevent plagiarism from getting out of and any further. In recent years, many colleges and universities have begun using programs to detect plagiarism. Schools turn to services such as www.TurnItIn.com as a prime weapon in the fight against plagiarism. These services run received papers through an immense database which contains publications from around the world. The service looks for certain key words and sentences which it compares to other key words and sentences in other previously published works. Using this new technology, most work turned in by students is checked and verified in the database. If something is too close for coincidence, or is obviously not cited right, this information will turn up during a scan through the…
What is Plagiarism?
Plagiarism is not just the act of copying someone else’s words and passing them off as your own. It is also the act of taking someone else’s ideas and taking claim or credit for them. Plagiarism can take various forms, in other words—and the best policy to adopt when doing academic research and writing is to always give credit where credit is due. There is never an advantage to gain from trying to steal someone else’s work—but there is everything to lose. On the other hand, properly citing sources and giving a reference anytime words or ideas are taken from a source is just good, academic practice and there’s no shame in citing other authors. So long as you contribute something new to the topic, citing other authors is actually looked highly upon: it shows you’ve taken the time to get to know what others have said…
Conselling Master Questionnaire
Describe the Boolean Approach (Hauser, 2009 p. 18)
In order to use counseling databases to search for information, it is important to develop appropriate search practices. The terms one types when searching will most likely provide the results owing to their meaning. Therefore, it is up to an individual to come up with a search strategy and learn the tips of using counseling databases. The tips will assist an individual in acquiring high quality information in the required amount. Additionally, an individual is likely to add intelligence to their search strategies, the more one knows the tips of searching, and they are likely to obtain better results.
The Boolean approach is among the techniques that will generate useful results when using counseling databases, and it aims at supporting scholarly research. On the other hand, Boolean operators are words, which have unique meanings that instruct the database to…

Students Plagiarize and Why They Should Be Told About it
Plagiarism has been the reason why "scholars'" names have been ripped off from roll of honors. Protracted court battles have been litigated because of lack of academic integrity. What exactly drives a student into using information from a source without acknowledging the source of information? Students can sometimes be a funny lot. They procrastinate so much. There are instances when assignments are given out and due dates for submitting the assignments are clearly stipulate. A student would never plan with the time he has at his disposal really well buoyed with the accessibility of information in this era of digital age where a search word in Google search engine would give you access to copious amount of information. Such students would probably party until the last day when assignments are to be submitted. That is when they will pick their…

Assignment Two
Black Swan is a sort of horror film, but one that we don't expect as it takes place in the world of ballet. Nina (Natalie Portman) is a ballerina who wants her chance at playing the swan in "Swan Lake," which means she will have to portray both the 'good' swan and the 'bad' swan. The problem is that she is such a good girl that nobody believes she has the chops to play the black swan. And in enters Lily (Mila Kunis), the bad girl who befriends Nina…and who tries to take over her role in "Swan Lake?"
The Black Swan is like a dream. It is about ambition, dreams, and self-doubt. It is about betrayal and desire. It is a film that is hard to put into a few neat words. Like Aronofsky's other films -- most notably Requiem for a Dream, Aronofsky is the king…

On the other hand, the most acceptable treatment, the survey showed, would be to give that student a failing grade and allow him or her to redo the assignment.
Article #3: TIME (supporting details from the article): This piece states that there are "hundreds of online paper mills" [i.e., web sites that produce research papers] which cater to "all the stressed-out, disaffected or just plain lazy students" who have credit cards and Internet access. And the Time article asserts that according to Rutgers professor Donald McCabe's research (a survey of 13,248 students), some 67% admitted to having cheated "at least once on a paper or test." That having been said, it is also true that colleges and universities are fighting back against the tidal wave of cheating by purchasing the services of www.turnitin.com, a eb site that reportedly has a database of "billions of eb pages, tens of thousands of…

copying of a few isolated sentences in this case constitute plagiarism?
Technically, yes. Plagiarism is "the appropriation of another person's ideas, processes, results, or words without giving appropriate credit" (On being a scientist, 2009: 15). The key word in this definition is 'appropriate.' Using a direct quote without enclosing the words in quotation marks and identifying the author constitutes plagiarism. Even if the original author is cited as a reference, if words are used directly and not identified as a direct quote, plagiarism has still taken place. It would not have been plagiarism if Professor Lee had paraphrased the original paper, cited the source, and then included the paper in his reference list.
It should be noted that this is not the most egregious example of academic plagiarism: because an academic's ideas and words are considered his or her livelihood, the most unconscionable form of plagiarism is when an academic…

Among other choices, those related to eating, drinking alcohol, sexuality, and peer group selection are some of the most important. In some respects, those decisions have a lot to do with the way that adolescent brains perceive, process, and react to external circumstances and experiences. The development of eating disorders is one example (Leon, Fulkerson, Perry, & Cudeck, 1993). Specifically, there is empirical cross-sectional data illustrating that specific teenage perception and interpretations of self-image (especially body-image) correspond to eating disorders. That valuable information provides a good strategy for identifying teens at greatest risk of developing eating disorders without knowing anything about their actual eating habits (Leon, Fulkerson, Perry, & Cudeck, 1993).
Adolescents value their peer group associations more than the approval of society more generally. They are also much less receptive to absolutes such as firm "all-or-none" rules prohibiting them from drinking any alcohol or requiring absolute sexual abstinence. Generally,…

speak or write, do you own the words that you have created? What about the thoughts that preceded those words?
What is originality?
In some sense, we are all 'original authors.' We compose our own ideas in our head and transmit them to the world in speech. Yet, on the other hand, it is just as easy to claim that because our words are the result of a series of subtle cultural influences, there is no 'original' thought. Even the greatest scientific innovations of earlier eras built upon the ideas of people who existed previously. Shakespeare borrowed most of his plots. The notion of someone who exists outside of culture is a fiction. Even the language we speak shapes and limits our conceptions of the world.
However, although originality may be a fiction, it is a necessary fiction. Without copyright laws, authors would have no incentive to create new ideas.…

advise students on the proper techniques for citations as well as on the consequences of plagiarism, this form of cheating is becoming even more popular with the advent of the orld ide eb, according to Julie Ryan's article "Student Plagiarism in an Online orld." However, Ryan also notes that the Internet also makes catching cheaters easier than ever and suggests the use of basic search engines like Alta Vista and Yahoo to aide professors or teachers in snagging dishonest students. Plagiarism essentially entails passing off someone else's work as one's own, and the act can take several forms, from purchasing ghost-written material from a willing writer to blatantly cutting and pasting blocks of text from online or print material. Regardless of the means or method, plagiarism is illegal and unfair.

An interesting point they bring up is the circumvention of cheating by having another person complete your coursework:
In the future we may be able to remotely identify individuals using devices that scan finger, voice, or eye-prints technology, which is already in use for security applications, but at present this seems a rather extreme measure. (Moore & Kearsley)
This also introduces the problem of plagiarism that has seeming run rampant in both online and traditional brick and mortar education. "Plagiarism is a particular worry for educators in the online environment because materials can be so easy located in captured electronically that the line between legitimate research and plagiarism is sometimes not easy for students to recognize." (Moore & Kearsley) However, anti-plagiarism efforts have increased tremendously over the past several years, both in distance learning as well as traditional education. Web sites like TurnItIn.com and others have greatly improved the search…

Cultural attitudes towards the notion of intellectual property vary by region. Throughout western civilization, for the most part, people do believe that certain words and expression are proprietorial. One can see this in the trademarking and licensing of certain names, terms, and other ideas associated with words. The notion may be slightly absurd, but people in western culture frequently believe that ideas and their wording can belong to either an individual or an organization, and that for people to utilize them they need to be monetarily compensated.
Of course, contemporary trends towards globalization and the ease of access facilitated by mobile devices, the internet, cloud computing, big data, and other technological advancements have certainly had an effect on this line of thought. People still seek to license and protect what they believe to be their rightful…

Chopin's "Story of an Hour" and the Use of Symbol
Kate Chopin uses various symbols, such as the open window, the home, the heart, the news of death, and stairs, to convey themes of alienation and otherness, both of which underscore the ultimate irony in "The Story of an Hour" about a woman who happily "becomes" a widow only to find, tragically, in her moment of bliss that her husband is actually still very much alive. Chopin's main character Mrs. Mallard is unhappily married to Mr. Mallard and it is this unhappiness that sets her apart from other women: "She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance" (Chopin) -- that is to say, Mrs. Mallard is set apart from other women by her lack of love for her husband. She eyes the open window and wants to…

Dear Maria,
Because you and I have always been so close, I wanted to let you know about an impending event in our family's lives. Because of our past conversations, you are aware that Mario and I have had many disagreements about how to raise Dominic. The situation has not improved much, although I know that Mario is trying to be a better parent. But I can no longer ignore the impact that Mario's interactions with Nicky are having. Mario continually loses his temper with Nicky and is now swatting Nicky on the head, in addition to smacking him on his bottom. Nicky now flinches whenever Mario comes near him.
Your brother is usually on his best behavior when his family or when friends are around, but I know you have seen Mario lose his temper with…

companies operating inside the United States attempt to conduct this business legally have become far and few between. The issues that will be investigated will include outsourcing the work offshore by these to places such as Pakistan, the Ukraine and the Philippines, the legal and ethical issues facing the students who use the service and the mechanics of the term paper writing industry. Frankly, due to these legal and cost issues, it is becoming less and less profitable for stateside companies to exist and this as much as legal pressure is propelling the offshore exodus. hile the laws may have not been totally effective, the lure for these companies for cheaper operating costs overseas is making the decision to leave the borders of the U.S. easier and making student term-paper cheating an international phenomenon.

Next, the rough draft, as the name suggests, does not need to be polished and can include grammatical errors. The rough draft is also free of plagiarism; any paraphrases are properly cited.

Revising the draft so that it is ready for presentation involves consulting dictionaries, grammar and usage reference books such as the Chicago Manual of Style and any writing resources available on the Internet. Expression of Ideas and Information and Structuring Written Communications Containing a Thesis and Argument
The most important part of academic writing is to make sure that the audience understands what is being communicated and there are some solid ways of achieving this if certain steps are followed, including providing a thesis statement and using topic sentences. It is also vitally important for academic writers to encapsulate their main thesis and argument in their analysis of texts in ways that make them distinguishable and understandable. Finally, it is also critically important for all writers to avoid plagiarizing others by ensuring that all sources used in a research paper are properly cited and all ideas are properly attributed. This paper provides a review of selected chapters from Diana Hacker's ules for Writers (2004) to explore these issues in greater details, followed by a summary of the research and important findings in the…

Honest Work in College
Basic Information From the Book
Preparing a Citation. When a source has provided data, theory, or authoritative opinion, a citation must be provided. In every case, when the concept or content is not original though, it is important to cite both the actual quotations used and the paraphrases. In addition, if conversations with authorities or professors, for instance, emails, or interviews or other similar forms of communication are a source of information, conceptualization, or thought, then citations are required. When you refer to a particular source frequently, multiple citations must be used. Alternately, fewer citations may be applied if the reader can understand from a clarifying statement in the writing that a particular resource has been used to address a particular topic. Note that citations are not needed for facts that are commonly known by the audience for which the writing is intended.

Dean of Students,
As I prepare to meet with you this coming week, I do so with a full understanding of the seriousness of my offense. However, this is an understanding that I have truly only gained during the last year and as a result of my own regrettable actions. Last year, I was accused of plagiarism for failing to properly quote and cite some of the sources that I used to complete a research paper for a Geography 100 level course. I am sorry to say that I am guilty of this offense.
However, I hope to make it clear to you in our meeting that this offense was not committed out of malice or dishonesty. It was a simple error in judgment and one that I will never make again. After enduring this process while simultaneously attempting to remain on top of my current studies, I have gained…
A appreciate the fact that this English course also included sections on writing effective narrative papers. I found narrative papers to be fun to write because they involve storytelling and rich descriptive language. I feel more creative writing narrative papers, which is why I prefer writing them, as opposed to research papers. When we write narrative papers, I can draw from personal experience, which makes the writing process easier than it is during the process of writing a research paper. Also, the techniques of writing narrative papers differ from the techniques of writing research and persuasive papers. Organization and focus is important, but the paper can be less formal in a narrative essay.
A found literary analysis papers to be among the most difficult to write. I found it very helpful to encounter some of the common techniques for approaching literary criticism. Learning about the different formats such as MLA…
There are three types of goals to focus one: short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals.
In a study environment, short-term goals would refer to attending classes, handing in assignments and studying for tests and other assessments. The study schedule plays the most important role in this type of goal. Furthermore helping to achieve this goal is the sections relating to academic honesty, as well as research and studying skills. Each goal can then be integrated with the time schedule in order to keep it in mind while adhering to the study schedule.
The medium-term goal would be to achieve success in the overall Axia study program.
Medium-term goals are generally fulfilled by a number of short-term goals that are completed successfully.
Long-term goals are the driving force for current action. In the long-term, for example, the Axia student may wish to stand within a specific profession. Success in the short- and…

Honor Codes
In academic institutions throughout the world, there are systems of codes which dictate how administration expects the student bodies to behave. These codes can be different based upon the specific rules of the institution in question. Some have clothing rules, others alcohol or narcotic rules, but there are certain dictums which are more universal. Many schools have rules which dictate that students must behave in ways which the institution considers to be honorable. These honor codes can include different components, but it is primarily a pledge against cheating in any sense of the word. Students in many institutions must sign honor pledges wherein they promise that they will not cheat on their assignments or their examinations. Also, if they are witness to any dishonesty on the part of their classmates, then they are responsible for revealing that duplicity to members of the staff or administration. The students pledge…

Blair Hornstein's personality through the Five Factor theory and Psychoanalytic theory. It has 3 sources.
Personality theories vary in their concepts, definition and usage. Due to this variability one, as an analyst can identify and associate with personality thereby understands people's characteristics, behaviors and the way interact within their environment. In this paper the researcher has chosen the McCrae and Costa's Five Factor Theory and Freud's Psychoanalytical Theory to analyze a media personality Blair Hornstein.
Blair Hornstein, a student of New Jersey is an 18-year-old girl who successfully caught the attention of the media, U.S. Courts and the U.S. President with her legal suit against her school Moorestown High School earlier this year. Her suit has been based on the fact that she wants to be the sole valedictorian of her class as she has A plus grades while the school wanted her to share the title with two other…

Financial Fraud
Financial fraud was an unfamiliar notion prior to the 2000's, but has become a controversial and familiar term due to economic woes, public disapproval and revamped financial regulations. Light was shed on some of America's top organizations intentionally changing their accounting books to look more attractive to investors than they were in actuality. Institutions and/or ranking officials at institutions were falsely publishing financial statements with fabricated values and profits presenting the illusion that investments with these entities were producing and would continue to produce consistent returns. In addition to recurring fraudulent activity, new highs for deposits of fraudulent checks were recorded by banks nationwide.
Government agencies aim to set regulations, enforce regulations, and protect American businesses and consumers from fraudulent activity. Laws are…
