This part-time project manager was being asked to fulfill several different roles in the organization concurrently. It is commonly known that for a project to stand a high probability of success, it requires a dedicated project manager (Schulz, 2000).
A second aspect of why this project failed was the lack of focus on goals, objectives and how the project fit into the overarching objectives of the company. The project goals drifted and often didn't have a clear focus on deliverables and quantified performance. The lack of a very clear, well defined mission for a project will often lead to its failure and confusion over status and deliverables (Puccinelli, 1999). This is exactly what happened on this project. Finally the leader did not provide enough visibility into hwo the project on a global level was progressing. The project teams in India did not know the status of software development in Cincinnati, and the development teams throughout Asia had not spoken to the U.S. Or Indian team in months. Global project teams need to have a unified strategy and direction to ensure continued accomplishment of goals and objectives (Barczak, McDonough, Athanassiou, 2006).
