Self-Care: An Action Plan for Reflective Nursing Practice
A. Reflection on Personal Self-Care Practices in the MANE-BSN Program
1. My values about healthy self-care activities
In my opinion, the relevance of healthy self-care activities cannot be overstated in the contemporary nursing environment. It is important to note that it is part of a nurse’s duty to promote the health and wellbeing of patients in an often stressful and challenging health care environment. In so doing, nurses could neglect their own needs and thus box themselves into a corner – from an emotional, mental, as well as physical wellbeing perspective (Jackson, 2004). For this reason, there is need to ensure that even in seeking to meet patient needs, one’s own health are not entirely neglected. Some balance ought to be found. Practicing regular self-care is of great relevance in seeking to manage the strenuous nature of the profession. It helps to be able to cope with daily challenges, and promotes physical, emotional psychological and spiritual wellbeing. It also enhances the safety and quality of patient care.
2. Reflection on personal self-care practices
For those in the helping profession, self-care could easily be one of the most important activities in the entire health and wellbeing promotion equation. This is a fact I never gave much thought to prior to joining nursing school. My schedule was largely crowded and I had to juggle between work, school, and taking care of my young kids. I totally lost myself in this setup. Today, I am fully aware of the relevance of practicing self-care given its direct link to the further promotion of better care for others. The assignment I wrote about self-care on the first semester of nursing school completely changed my perception. Thanks to this assignment, I developed a different perception of self-care and got familiar with key concepts of self-care.
At present, my schedule remains busy but I continue to practice the relevant self-care activities. Towards this end, I routinely practice activities that promote each category of self-care:...

A Self Care Plan for Preventing Burnout at Work Abstract/Summary An action plan is a way to establish a step-by-step guide for oneself to follow in order to achieve a goal. The main goal for this action plan is self-care. There are six areas of self-care that this action plan focuses on: physical, emotional, cognitive, social, financial and spiritual. The action plan identifies three sub goals within each area and describes the
Dorothea Orem and her Self-Care Model of Nursing Theory Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1914, Dorothea Orem went on to become a much-revered nursing leader in the United States, innovating, developing and teaching her self-care model up until her death in 2007. Her self-care model is in great use today and is the subject of this paper. Orem received her nursing diploma in 1939 (from Providence Hospital) and in 1945 she
Assessing the Problem: Leadership, Collaboration, Communication, Change Management, and Policy ConsiderationsIntroductionThe patient health problem I will explore during my practicum is the challenges faced by individuals with quadriplegia and co-morbidities who are medically fragile. These individuals often rely heavily on others for assistance with daily activities and may require the use of heavy medical equipment, making travel and mobility difficult. This can also place a strain on their families, who
Translational Research Emphasis for the last thirty years has been on shifting nursing curricula out of hospitals to universities. The education of nurses is now increasingly leaning towards theory. This has led to an obvious gap between what is experienced in the practical healthcare settings by nurses and what is taught in lecture halls (Saifan, AbuRuz, & Masa'deh, 2015). Nursing practice is just one of the areas of healthcare that is experiencing
Nursing Theorist Grid Dorothea Oren Theory Over the years, nursing theories have been used in defining the ways healthcare is delivered through the interaction of patients and nurses. This study presents a theoretical discussion of the self-care concept in relation to health care delivery among elderly patients. The self-care concept is popular as Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing by Orem. Orem's theory perceives individuals as self-care agents equipped with unique needs.
Dorothea Orem Self-Care Theory What is state of nursing during Dorothea Orem's time? Dorothea Orem is one of the foremost theorists in the field of nursing in the United States who developed the self-care theory between 1949 and 1957. Orem developed this theory at a time when nursing was characterized by deficits in the training of practical nurses (Basavanthappa, 2007, p.72). During this period, there was a huge need to upgrade practical
