This is also an aspect that has affected my sister. One of the central facets that many experts note is that "Psychological, social, and sexual problems occur more often in people with spina bifida than in the general population. "
Another problem that many people with Sinal Bifida experience is an allergy to natural rubber of Latex. Latex is used for example in the manufacture of medical gloves and various other common items such as elastic. Research studies have shown that "...up to 73% of children and adolescents with Spina Bifida are sensitive to latex as measured by blood test or by a history of an allergic reaction."
This allergy is more than just an irritation and can in fact be life threatening. My family and I therefore have to be continually vigilant in terms of my sister's contact with various common items that may have a Latex content. Experts warn that latex allergy can have severe consequences.
All individuals with Spina Bifida should be considered at high risk for having an allergic reaction to natural rubber (not synthetic rubber) and should avoid contact with latex products in all settings from birth. Alternative products usually made of silicone, plastic, nitrile or vinyl can usually be safely substituted.
4. Conclusion
In general, modern medicine has succeeded in improving the coping techniques and outlook for the patient suffering from Spina Bifida. This includes advanced surgical techniques which have resulted in the improvement of the quality of life of those individuals afflicted with this condition. There have also been improvements in terms of early diagnoses and in corrective surgery.
Spinal Bifida patient is usually treated by an entire team of medical practitioners, which can include "...neurologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, physical medicine specialists, endocrinologists, urologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, nurses, dietitians, social workers, and other professionals."
Living with a sibling who has this condition presents a unique insight not only into the problems and difficulties of this condition, but also insight into the endurance, courage and patience that the individual sufferer often exhibits. In my particular case I am continually amazed at the perseverance and the bravery that my sibling shows in the face of the multiple and often severely debilitating symptoms that Spina Bifida can cause. Living with a sibling who has this condition has also made more aware of the importance of physical health that so many of us take for granted. This is a severely debilitating condition that can lead to both physicals and mental problems. However, it is also a condition that can be lived with and improved through foritudfe, medical science and the help of others.
