Police workforce remains an environment that is highly stressful being an occupation that a person has to deal with physical dangers and risking their lives any time they are working. Research indicates that the prevalent stress warning signs that need to deal with immediately they appear are sudden behavior changes in behavior, erratic work behavior, increase of sick time because of minor problems, failure to preserve a train of thought, and extreme worrying. There are many ways, which departments in the police force can deal with stressing the police force. The first mechanism is provision of stress management initiatives to both offices and their spouses. There is a need for identification of officers under stress and offer them counseling to assist in alleviating their stress. Periodic screenings as well as training concentrating on stress management is necessary.

Confidential counseling to officers with their families has to be a priority with studies showing that psychological treatment has been proven to tackle stress. Its success is amplified when it is customized to fit the client's culture and inclination (Toch & Floss, 2002). The services need to accessed through various pathways like self-initiated or department recommendation to in-house psychologists, community psychologists, police psychologists and employee assistance initiatives purposely trained to work police officers (Territo & Vetter, 2001). The importance of confidential counseling and the provider having substantive experience in terms of working with public safety staff is paramount elements for the counseling success of police officers. Confident police administrators tends to develop relationships with community psychologists with proven knowledge level and expertise pertaining to the unique enforcement staff experiences in whom they have assurance thereby making the entire counseling process easy.
Crisis negotiation needs quick thinking, human behavior knowledge, motivation, efficient communication skills, and the capacity to remain composed amidst chaos. Psychologists who work with various crisis negotiation teams have to gain education as well as work experience in appropriate fields and attain certification in specific fields offered by them.
