Human dignity in the Pastoral Constitution and American values

¶ … teachings on human dignity written in the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World is surprisingly resonant with core American values and political policies. For example, in section 17 of the Pastoral Constitution, Pope Paul VI states, "Only in freedom can man direct himself toward goodness." The United States of America was founded on the principle of freedom as a divine human right, and freedom remains the heart of American values. However, the discourse of freedom has become unbalanced in the United States. The Pope points out, "Often however they foster it perversely as a license for doing whatever pleases them, even if it is evil." The current problems facing Americans could be dealt with more efficiently and effectively if freedom is checked by wisdom and grace. The Church's teachings on human dignity outlined in the Pastoral Constitution are therefore realistic but not yet put into practice in the United States. It may be possible to merge freedom and faith without making the endeavor explicitly religious in nature: by simply focusing on the importance of human dignity in world affairs.
