There are many common issues that the implementation of an e-commerce website is going to run into during the development, testing and launch process. The most common is the performance and usability of the online ordering application (Boyer, Hult, 569).

In addition, the integration of the online ordering application to the back-end systems that are necessary for getting the right price, accessing the product catalog so a visitor to the site can all products, and the navigation of the catalog are all common issues that often come up during the implementation of an e-commerce site (Boyer, Hult, 572). There are the compatibility concerns and regression testing necessary to make sure the site can run on the multitude of browsers that are in use globally today (Shaw, 79).

There are several approaches to managing this ongoing process, one of which is using Web Services-based queries generated randomly over the Web to test the sites' performance, speed and responsiveness to a widely varying number of requests for data (Chang, Chuang, 159). Another approach is to define a test suite of applications, shell scripts and commands often run from a UNIX-based system that can simultaneously manage multiple tasks to test the e-commerce site and its applications (Shaw, 79).

Another approach is to have an internal software quality audit of the site and stress test the key applications including the catalog and online ordering applications, in addition to the catalogs (Shaw, 82). Larger websites will do all of these and have a strategy in place for stress testing their sites to ensure a high level of performance and security over the long-term.

The best approach to finding a solution to any problems that arise is isolate each by the type of system that the problem is arising from and complete an audit of the sequence of events that cause the problem.
