Worldmaking Practices In And Through Assessment

This idea conflicts with the fact that many tourists, particularly Western tourists, actually view the freedom to travel as a hallmark of a free market, democratic society. This is the case even when calls to end tourism have been predicated on improvement of the toured environment. For example, "even attempts to boycott tourism due to the existence of clear links between human rights abuses and the tourism industry as in Burma" are perceived as an attack on the freedom to travel (Bianchi 2007). When tourists persist in exhibiting that type of disregard for the living conditions of the people living in tourist-rich areas, it should come as no surprise that some of those people will internalize the type of anti-tourist behavior that results in terrorist activity, particularly tourist-direct terrorist activity.

Conclusion

The impact of tourism on worldmaking is oftentimes taken for granted, but its real impact has not been studied in a systemic manner. Likewise, the idea of global terrorism, which has developed extensively over the past two decades, is discussed as a negative means of worldmaking, by making people all over the world vulnerable to the violent spillover of issues that were once considered local issues. What this research reveals is that globalization and global tourism, by necessitating contact between tourists and local residents, both impacts and is impacted by terrorist activity. Obviously, terrorist activity has a chilling effect on tourism. However, more interesting is the idea that tourist activity may have an encouraging effect on terrorism.
