As the world grows increasingly connected at all times, the ability to maintain constant, reliable connectivity becomes ever more important. 5G is significantly faster than 4G, offers substantially more capacity, and operates on a more unified platform (Everything You Need, 2023). Although concerns remain about the privacy and security of 5G networks, the technology holds great promise for making it much easier for more people to enjoy the benefits of the Internet and to use online capabilities in a seamless, uninterrupted fashion.

How 5G Works and Its Key Capabilities

The technical foundation of 5G is orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) — "a method of modulating a digital signal across several different channels to reduce interference" — combined with the use of "wider bandwidth technologies such as sub-6 GHz and mmWave" (Everything You Need, 2023, par. 3). The greater flexibility and scalability that 5G offers opens it up to a much wider range of applications than previous generations of mobile technology.

One of the most important potential applications for 5G is its ability to enhance connectivity for rural communities currently underserved by broadband infrastructure. It can effectively bridge the gap between the digital haves and have-nots that still exists across many parts of America. 5G can close these gaps through its "roaming capabilities" between cellular and Wi-Fi connections, allowing individuals on mobile devices to "stay connected as they move between outdoor wireless connections and wireless networks inside buildings without user intervention or the need for users to reauthenticate" (What Is 5G, 2023, par. 3). This frees people from the need to remain stationary in order to stay connected, or to gravitate toward businesses that advertise Wi-Fi access.

Ethical Dilemmas of 5G Adoption

In terms of ethical considerations, 5G technology has the potential to remedy many of the difficulties that the ideal of constant connectivity has generated. Today, people shop online, pursue education online, and gain significant benefits from using wireless technology to communicate. Individuals in underserved communities, however, often lack this easy access. 5G improves virtual accessibility and makes it much easier to use a phone while on the go, rather than requiring a laptop or desktop computer tethered to a Wi-Fi connection at a café or library. Roaming 5G users can perform many basic but essential functions — including video calls via Zoom, online banking, browsing job listings, and downloading textbooks — all without needing to remain near a stable Wi-Fi source. This can meaningfully promote knowledge acquisition and enable multitasking with everyday life functions.

5G also has the potential to significantly enhance healthcare delivery, which is particularly relevant for rural and remote areas that are often medically underserved. "In healthcare, 5G technology…will enable patients to be monitored via connected devices that constantly deliver data on key health indicators, such as heart rate and blood pressure" (What Is 5G, 2023, par. 11). For example, if someone does not have easy access to a healthcare clinic, health monitoring data can still be transmitted to a remote physician who can screen it for abnormalities.
