Many of the noises are better characterized as notifications rather than true emergency alerts. Clearly, changes are needed that help both nurses and surgeons distinguish between a routine notification and a genuine emergency requiring immediate attention. Without a deeper understanding of the reasons behind alarm fatigue, it is very difficult to propose effective options to combat it.

Patient Safety Risks and Consequences

Combating alarm fatigue is extremely important and must be addressed sooner rather than later. Without doing so, the medical personnel on whom patients rely will inadvertently put those same patients at risk, undermining efforts to help them heal and recover enough to leave the hospital. Terminal patients who need pain medication and other forms of related care may also go too long without receiving what they truly need, severely reducing the quality of the time they have remaining. In some cases, patients have died because nurses ignored alarms for too long and failed to check on patients properly or in a timely manner. In the surgical suite, surgeons rely on their teams to help them monitor alerts, but that does not mean the entire surgical team is immune to alarm fatigue.

Why Current Alarm Systems Fail

Planned changes intended to address alarm fatigue—particularly in nursing—involve the actual sounds that alarms produce. Studies have shown that these noises are tuned out partly because they can seem "unfriendly" and because they are too similar to one another. The tones, volume levels, and durations of current alarms are so closely grouped that they offer little value in helping personnel distinguish one alert from another. This is a major reason why nurses, surgeons, and other medical staff tune them out. It is not that these professionals fail to appreciate the importance of alarms; rather, the alarms blend together into a cacophony of noise that must be mentally filtered out in order to function in a fast-paced medical environment. Since the sounds have to be tuned out in their current form, it stands to reason that the sounds themselves must be changed. By providing nurses and surgeons with alarm sounds that are clearly distinct from one another—and different from what is currently used—the likelihood of reducing alarm fatigue increases substantially.
