In this sense, he was like one of the earliest astronauts of the experimental music scene, exploring the relationships between space and sound in ways no one had before.
Some of his early human influences include John Cage, who was a major figure in the development of experimental and avant-garde music and with whom Lucier studied at the New School for Social Research in New York City. As Prpa and Pasquier point out, it was a physicist and an experimentalist (Cage) who first pushed Lucier into performance: "Alvin Lucier was initially introduced to 'brain-music' by his friend, physicist Edmond Dewan. With the assistance of Dewan and support from John Cage, Lucier performed Music for Solo Performer at the Rose Art Museum (Waltham, Massachusetts) in 1965, which constitutes the first recorded brainwave music performance. Moreover, Lucier's sonification of Alpha waves laid the foundation for what Jacques Vidal would call 'brain-computer-interface art' (BCI art)."6 BCI can be understood as a synthesis between computer technology and the brain. Prpa and Pasquier define it as "a system that senses and utilizes brain activity in one-way communication from a brain to a computer."7 For Lucier, this kind of synthesis was revelatory: it opened a previously unexplored dimension in the arts.
In his work, Lucier often explores the intersection of music, sound, science, and philosophy. One of the central themes is the interplay of the physical properties of sound—reverberation and resonance—and how those properties can be used to create new forms of musical expression. In his piece I Am Sitting in a Room, Lucier uses sound recording and playback technology to create a feedback loop that gradually distorts a spoken text until it becomes abstract sound. The piece is a study of the natural acoustic properties of a room and how it interacts with sound. Lucier states in the piece:
"I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now. I am recording the sound of my speaking voice, and I am going to play it back into the room again and again, until the resonant frequencies of the room reinforce themselves, so that any semblance of my speech, with perhaps the exception of rhythm, is destroyed. What you will hear, then, are the natural resonant frequencies of the room, articulated by speech. I regard this activity not so much as a demonstration of a physical fact, but more as a way to smooth out any irregularities my speech might have."
Lucier's stutter is audible in the recording—a speech defect he had his entire life—and the fact that he neither hid nor edited it out reveals his fascination with the complex relationships between the mind, the body, and sound. The words he speaks are played back again and again until any semblance of speech is lost, leaving only the sound of sound itself: a haunting recording that undoubtedly inspired some of the psychedelic sounds of the 1970s heard in bands like Pink Floyd. Alternatively, in Septet for Three Winds, Four Strings and Pure Wave Oscillator, one can hear something akin to the eerie beacon of the black monolith in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Like that cinematic beacon, Lucier's work often deals with the relationship between the listener and the sound source, and with how the perception of sound can be manipulated through specific spatial arrangements. In Music on a Long Thin Wire, Lucier uses a long wire energized by a small electric current to create a physical and perceptual exploration of sound—an investigation of how sound behaves in space and how it is perceived by the listener.
Lucier's work also frequently references scientific and philosophical concepts, such as the nature of perception and the relationship between mind and body. He was influenced by the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein, whose ideas about language and meaning shaped Lucier's use of language in his compositions. Wittgenstein's ideas about the relationship between language and reality, as well as his emphasis on "language-games," informed Lucier's use of spoken language in works like I Am Sitting in a Room, where spoken text is gradually distorted by a room's natural acoustics, transforming language into abstract sound and exploring how our understanding of meaning is shaped by physical surroundings.8
The specific works of Wittgenstein that influenced Lucier are the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus—an early work presenting a picture theory of meaning—and Philosophical Investigations, his later work in which he critiques his own earlier views and presents new perspectives on language and meaning.9
Lucier was also influenced by neuroscientists who studied auditory perception, which shaped his use of sound in his compositions.10 He was intrigued by the way the brain processes sound and how people perceive it. His piece Music on a Long Thin Wire exemplifies this: the way sound is affected by the physical properties of the wire reflects Lucier's engagement with the study of auditory perception. In Sferics, he captures the natural radio waves emitted by lightning, referencing how sound can be transmitted through different media and how our perception is affected by the physical properties of those media.
