This paper surveys the major career paths available within law enforcement, arguing that the field offers something for nearly every interest and temperament. It examines the physical demands and dangers of general police work, the more mentally intensive nature of detective and administrative roles, and the niche area of environmental law enforcement. The paper concludes that, regardless of specialty, all law enforcement professionals share a core mission of public safety — and that the non-monetary rewards of the career, such as community impact and personal fulfillment, outweigh financial considerations.
A career in law enforcement is one of the most versatile and worthy callings a person could pursue. The wide variety of directions this career choice offers caters to almost any interest, and provides many benefits as well.
General police work — such as homicide investigation and general crime fighting — involves a high degree of risk. Law enforcement has long been recognized as an extremely dangerous profession. During the 1990s, for example, the average number of police officers killed in the line of duty in a single year was around 150 (Gunter, 1997). Some may view this level of risk as a benefit, since high danger also brings a rush of adrenaline. In addition, the work demands a high degree of physical health and fitness, which can be an advantage in terms of maintaining good physical condition.
Apart from the physical, high-risk opportunities in patrol work, law enforcement also encompasses more mentally demanding roles, such as office administration and detective work. While detective work certainly involves some risk, it is a more intellectually demanding pursuit than street patrol. Detectives must analyze evidence, conduct interviews, and build cases — skills that appeal to individuals who prefer cognitive challenges over physical confrontation.
"Conservation officers and juvenile mentoring programs"
In all of the above examples, it is clear that the primary responsibility of every law enforcement professional is to ensure public safety by upholding the law. Officers across all specialties are therefore of immeasurable value to the communities they serve. It is difficult to imagine a more rewarding career. Monetary reward certainly takes no precedence over intangible benefits such as being able to help others and make a meaningful difference in the world.
