This personal reflection essay explores one student's journey toward choosing physical therapy as a career. Beginning with a childhood fascination with dentistry, the author traces the experiences and realizations that redirected their ambitions — including a documentary about accident survivors, hands-on exposure at a physical therapy facility, and a natural inclination toward helping others. The essay weighs competing career options, addresses the appeal of patient interaction, and ultimately argues that personal fulfillment and the visible impact of rehabilitative work make physical therapy the most fitting professional path.
There is a wide range of distinct career paths one could choose to follow in healthcare. These include, but are not limited to, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, occupational therapy, epidemiology, and more. I chose to pursue physical therapy.
From quite an early age, I have always wanted to work in the healthcare field. My ambitions shifted over time, shaped by personal experiences and a growing awareness of the many ways healthcare professionals can improve people's lives. Ultimately, it was a combination of personal encounters, observation, and self-reflection that led me to choose physical therapy as my career of choice.
At first, I wanted to be a dentist. I remember one particular night when a toothache would not let me sleep — I still regard that as the worst night of my life. A simple toothache can effectively derail your day, especially when you cannot access immediate medical attention. Those who have experienced dental pain can appreciate exactly what I mean. The next morning, I was the first patient at the dentist's office. After the standard procedure of extracting the offending tooth, the pain was gone. The dentist had made my suffering disappear, and I immediately knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I was six years old at the time. With the pain gone, I could sleep, play with friends, and watch my favorite cartoons without any distraction.
As I grew older, I came to realize that apart from dentistry, there were many other health professions I could enter. I have always loved helping others, and there is nothing that makes me happier than putting a smile on someone's face.
A documentary I watched a few years ago regarding the challenges that some accident victims face in rebuilding their lives convinced me to settle on physical therapy as my career of choice. The film portrayed people who had been fully functional — only to have their capabilities suddenly limited by a neck or back injury. For such individuals, the journey toward full or improved functionality can be long and deeply challenging.
After watching the documentary, I realized that I would be far happier playing an active role in making that journey easier and more beneficial for patients. The idea of supporting someone through a difficult rehabilitative process, and seeing real, measurable progress, resonated with me more than any other healthcare role I had considered.
