This paper presents a case study to establish the CSR and sustainable approaches utilized by SUZHOU GOOD-ARK Electronics Co., Ltd, a company based in China. The analysis is conducted using a responsible innovation inventory to determine the various aspects of CSR and sustainability employed by the company. The general analysis of the company's responsible innovation is carried out through the responsible business mindset framework.
Case Description
SUZHOU GOOD-ARK Electronics Co., Ltd is a Jiangsu-based company with operations in the discrete devices and integrated circuit packaging businesses. The company's primary products are diodes, surface-mounted devices, bridge rectifiers, photovoltaic bypass integrated modules, quad flat no-lead (QFN) package integrated circuits (IC), and dual flat no-lead package IC products ("About Us," n.d.). The company also offers solar silver products and accelerometers.
These products are consumed primarily in the aerospace, green lighting, automotive, information technology, home appliances, large industrial products, and other electronic device fields. The markets for Good-Ark's products span both the domestic Chinese market and the international market. The company was founded in November 1990 and is listed as one of the top ten best-known high-tech companies manufacturing semiconductors in the Chinese electronics industry. The firm has yearly sales of approximately USD 125 million, based on 2011 figures. More than 2,800 employees across its ten companies make up the SUZHOU GOOD-ARK Electronics corporate family.
This case is considered a suitable selection for the study objective because much existing CSR and sustainability research has focused on large multinationals, with little research targeting the electronics manufacturing industry — particularly semiconductors. The findings of this study are therefore considered an eye-opener for two reasons: (1) the selection of a case study with operations in the semiconductor industry, and (2) the fact that the company is located in China while targeting the international market (Tang et al., 2018). The Chinese market is considered particularly interesting given the culture and traditions of Chinese society (Tourigny et al., 2019) and the political environment of the People's Republic of China.
Responsible Innovation Inventory
SUZHOU GOOD-ARK Electronics Co., Ltd has developed eight models considered to be innovative strategies for tackling social and ethical issues: (1) humanistic care, (2) human-centered education, (3) adoption of green practices, (4) promotion of health, (5) philanthropic actions within society, (6) voluntary services, (7) recording and publicizing human-centered practices, and (8) fulfillment of the company's role responsibilities ("Suzhou Good-Ark Electronics," 2019).
To address contemporary environmental issues, the company has made innovations and committed to environmental sustainability by adopting environmental policies that align with various aspects of the company's practices. Canon and Sony have approved the company as a Green Partner. Good-Ark pursues sustainable growth and employee well-being. The company supports the RoHS Directive and meets REACH requirements. Its devices are halogen-free and lead-free by design, and its products do not contain tin, tungsten, tantalum, or gold. The company also complies with Automotive Electronic Council (AEC) Q100/Q101 Automotive Reliability Testing standards and supports the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) ("Our Certifications," n.d.).
One of the most significant innovations by Good-Ark is the set of eight models designed to promote happiness among its employees, qualifying it as a "happy company." This social and ethical innovative strategy is primarily founded on the collective values of Chinese society. The company's founders aspired to make Good-Ark a "one big family" (Pingping & Longfeng, 2014). To achieve this aspiration, the founder made "employee happiness" one of the company's core missions.
The company also emphasizes learning the "sage culture" (Pingping & Longfeng, 2014). Beginning with human-centered care, Good-Ark has made significant investments in educating its employees about classical Chinese teachings — for example, Confucius' Analects ("Corporate Social Responsibility…," 2015). Notably, to determine how happy an employee is, the company assesses how well he or she fulfills responsibilities unrelated to the job, such as how well he or she cares for their child.
On the environmental sustainability front, Good-Ark has developed products that align with ISO 9001 and TS 16949 standards ("Our Certifications," n.d.). Since its formation, the company has maintained a quality policy guiding its products' design and manufacture. That management policy is to deliver Japanese quality (the highest quality), Chinese price (the most competitive price possible), six-star service (exceeding customer expectations), and US speed (the fastest action speed) ("Quality," n.d.).
Three factors guide Good-Ark's quality policy: (1) quality — high quality and good service; (2) efficiency — high productivity and cost-effectiveness; and (3) standardization — doing things correctly from the starting point. Finally, Good-Ark's innovative products are designed to meet environmental safety policy, protecting the environment and benefiting humankind in general. This is achieved through the development of enterprises and practices that are "people-oriented" ("Quality," n.d.).
Since the founding of Good-Ark, its chairman instituted strategies and practices designed to deliver on corporate social responsibility and produce quality products ("Corporate Social Responsibility…," 2015). In its research and development, the company continues to produce innovative products to deliver on environmental sustainability.
It is therefore argued that the company has adopted a radical innovative approach. Of particular note is the innovative practice of ensuring employee happiness. Unlike other companies that adopt non-profit strategies primarily to drive sales or social reputation, Good-Ark adopted these methods to achieve the collective approach of caring for others — a value common in Chinese society ("Suzhou Good-Ark Electronics," 2019).
It should be noted, however, that some of the company's products have also been developed through incremental innovation, particularly as the company continues research and development initiatives to improve its existing semiconductors.
The innovative approach that Good-Ark has adopted is a company innovation approach. As a leader in semiconductor manufacturing, the company has independently developed its sustainable technology for designing and manufacturing semiconductors. The eight models used within the company are also specific to Good-Ark (Enkel & Gassmann, 2010). As a result, both the environmental sustainability practices and the social and ethical approaches are developed and implemented by Good-Ark itself.
Good-Ark demonstrates two kinds of innovation: product innovation and service innovation. As a manufacturer of sustainable semiconductors compliant with various green and sustainability certifications, it engages in product innovation (Dohse & Niebuhr, 2018).
In addition to the innovation of novel products, Good-Ark has invested in sustainable services for the community and its employees. Notable is the company's "happy employees" innovative program. This program is unique in the technology and manufacturing industry, engaging in employee education and measuring the program's effectiveness not only through work-based performance but through non-work-related performance as well — for example, the health of family relationships.
The innovations at Good-Ark are best described as combining both first-order and second-order innovations (Oke, 2007). The semiconductors manufactured by the company are designed to solve existing problems — representing first-order innovation. Meanwhile, the employee happiness program constitutes a second-order innovation: a fundamentally new approach to ensuring employee wellness (Maak et al., 2016).
The innovations practiced by Good-Ark were initiated at the company's founding. The founder had a precise understanding of the company's mission and vision, and was the first to adopt these types of practices within the company. Based on this, and in line with the categories described by Rogers (2005), Good-Ark qualifies as an innovator — designing and practicing the various social, ethical, and environmental approaches observed in the company today.
Conclusion
Based on the Responsible Innovation Inventory findings presented herein, this paper concludes that SUZHOU GOOD-ARK Electronics Co., Ltd has a healthy and effective CSR approach. The company's founder designed its eight models to reach all four approaches targeted by CSR initiatives: the stakeholder approach — particularly the company's employees — the societal approach, the economic approach, and the environmental approach.
The company has established care and educational programs, including instruction in the sage culture, which ensures that employees are supported not only to meet their job obligations but also in their personal lives. The company has adopted various environmentally friendly strategies, including the use of cutting-edge packaging technologies that yield products free of tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold. Moreover, the company aims to improve society's health, undertake philanthropic and voluntary initiatives, and publicize some of its humanistic practices.
