Elderly care has received increased attention in recent years as the number of older people in the United States continues to grow. Having witnessed elderly people struggle with vulnerability, stress, chronic diseases, and the loss of function and social relationships, I have long been interested in understanding what providing care for the elderly looks like and what it means to live and work in such an environment. For this cultural experience, I visited a nursing home in order to learn what it means and entails to provide care to older people dealing with a wide range of issues. I visited Arias Health at Harbor View on March 11, 2022. Since the purpose of the visit was to develop cultural competence in relation to caring for patients, I was there for a period of two hours.
First Impressions of the Nursing Home
I was excited and looking forward to the visit, as it was an opportunity to learn about elderly care and cultural humility in patient care. However, I was also anxious and nervous, since it was my first time visiting such a facility. The nursing home was generally pleasant, though it is designed in an institutional format. Residents share a dining room and have access to a meeting room where they can receive visitors. Each resident also has a private bedroom and bathroom. In addition, the facility has a small center for recreational activities and physical exercise. From my observations, the nursing home employs several healthcare professionals, including occupational therapists and nurses, all of whom appeared excellent in their work and focused on keeping residents happy.
Initial Anxieties and Misconceptions
Because this was my first visit to a nursing home, I was genuinely nervous and uncertain about what to expect. While I appreciated the general setting and surroundings, I felt slightly uncomfortable upon arrival. I had many thoughts about how the healthcare professionals would receive me, and I also wondered whether the elderly residents would be friendly. I expected it would be difficult to hold conversations with them because of their health challenges, and I worried that their loss of function might affect their ability to recognize me as a visitor or engage with me warmly. As a result of these thoughts, I was very shy, nervous, and a bit reluctant to interact with the healthcare professionals and residents during the first few minutes of my visit.
Conclusion: Applying Cultural Competence as a Pharmacist
This experience has shaped my understanding of the importance of developing cultural awareness and competence. As a future pharmacist, I will strive to understand the cultures of the colleagues I work alongside and the patients I interact with. Cultural awareness will help me maintain the right attitude when engaging with others and allow me to become more understanding and empathetic. As this experience demonstrated, addressing misconceptions and biases requires direct, genuine interaction with others. I will be intentional in my interactions — particularly with those from different cultural backgrounds — when working as a pharmacist. This commitment will help me provide appropriate and effective solutions to my patients' challenges and ensure that I am genuinely culturally competent in my practice.
