Lamarckism is a theory named after Jean Baptiste de Lamarck, a French naturalist who published Zoological Philosophy in 1809 (Wikipedia, 2005). In Lamarck's view, organic beings constituted a ladder of life ranging from the simplest organisms to complex animals, with humans at the top rung. Lamarck offered little explanation for the origin of this ladder, but he did propose an account of how organisms change over time — effectively transforming that ladder into what we might call an escalator of being.
Why Evolutionary Misconceptions Matter
Scientists and science educators broadly agree on the importance of understanding evolutionary principles as the unifying theme for learning about the origin, history, and diversity of life on Earth. The key distinction between Lamarck's and Darwin's ideas concerns what happens when variation appears in the progression from lower to higher forms. Lamarck held that acquired characteristics arise after the environment changes — that is, a change in the environment directly produces a corresponding change in the organism. Darwin, by contrast, believed that variations are already present within a population before the environment changes.
Lamarck understood evolution in terms of individual organisms, whereas Darwin recognized that populations are the fundamental unit of evolutionary change. Darwin argued that random differences between individuals affect their fitness, and that more fit individuals tend to survive and reproduce at higher rates. Lamarck, on the other hand, theorized that organisms become more fit in direct response to their environment — a mechanism now understood to be scientifically unsupported.
