As a baccalaureate-prepared nurse supervising clinical staff nurses, communication must be transparent to make collaboration efficient. The nursing practice scenario involves one of three nurses under supervision approaching me with a question about an unfamiliar diagnosis: sepsis associated with urinary tract infection. For patient-centered care, a training method has been introduced as a revision of the CICARE communication model through Chineseization, called the "six-step standard communication process" (Geng et al., 2022). It entails connecting, introducing, communicating, asking, responding, and exiting as six key steps for rapid communication and higher levels of professionalism in health services. This model is especially valuable for creating patient-nurse harmony and trust.
Active Listening and Mentorship in Clinical Settings
Active listening is expected from the nurse under supervision as they receive guidance from the mentoring nurse regarding diagnosis-based research and its application. Learning is enhanced through continuous interaction. Empathy, respect, and patience — in listening, applying evidence-based research, introducing oneself to patients, and explaining diagnoses — all contribute to responding effectively to health crises with polite and professional communication.
