The aim of the TFCISP is to assist The Fitness Center in obtaining a competitive advantage over other fitness clubs by providing a system to help members plan a fitness program to meet their particular needs. With five fitness centers in the metropolitan area, approximately 650 members and 30 employees at each location, the system will be used by both members and fitness consultants to track participation in various fitness activities, such as free weights, volleyball, swimming, stair climbers, and yoga and aerobic classes.

The development of the TFCISP will use commercial-grade software from the Microsoft family. This choice is driven by usability, user-friendliness, and the available support from local Microsoft service providers and dealers. The TFCISP will be a thin-client application in order to enable users and process owners to access the application anytime and anywhere — including clients who travel frequently and need online advice for "fitness during travel," where fitness consultants will be available for online consultations. The server operating system will be MS Server 2003 with an SQL Server relational database. The server will be housed in the Main Office's Data Center of The Fitness Center. The system will be scalable to meet the future requirements of The Fitness Center.

Roles and Responsibilities

The following defines the general roles and responsibilities during the study, development, and implementation of the system.

Project Management Role will be tasked to the Project Manager and involves all project stakeholders, the project team, and the project steering committees. The main goal of Project Management is to deliver the system within project constraints. The specific tasks are to:

  • Track and manage the project budget, resources, and schedule
  • Drive the risk management process
  • Facilitate communications across all lines of communication (PMBOK, 2004)
  • Monitor and track progress and manage status reporting
  • Drive the overall solutions design and manage the systems functional specifications

  • Improve the quality and usability of the system by providing a "layman's outlook" (Philips, 2004) during interview and validation processes
  • Act as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in the design of the system
  • Involve themselves in the User Acceptance and Testing (UAT) (SEI-CMMI, 2002) phase of the project
  • Participate in the formulation and validation of systems functional requirements specifications
  • Own and implement (for fitness consultants and Fitness Center staff) the physical designs of the system

Development and Implementation Role will be tasked to the TFCISP Project Team. They will interface with operations and support units of The Fitness Center. The primary goal is to develop and implement the systems application in accordance with gathered and documented specifications. The specific tasks are to:

  • Code, develop, and document systems features that meet Systems Design Specifications (SDS) (SEI-CMMI, 2002)
  • Conduct code reviews and carry out unit testing
