Technology has certainly done wonders for learning, but has also contributed to children preferring video games to outdoor exercise. This, in combination with unhealthy diets and sugary sodas at school, has negatively impacted children's health.

Dutch researchers in public health and epidemiology were so alarmed by these trends that they developed a study to measure the effects of using fruits and vegetables as an intervention during mid-morning school breaks (Tak et al., 2010). These researchers are well qualified on this topic, as they are professionals in epidemiology, biostatistics, and public health at major universities in Holland. The information examined in this study has been investigated before and in various quantitative contexts. For instance, studies evaluating the relationship between consumption of sweet snacks and dietary preferences found that a number of influencing factors contribute to a child's food preferences (Kalsbeek and Verrips, 1994).

Research Problem and Questions

The study aims to investigate whether a primary school-based intervention of healthy fruits and vegetables would decrease the intake of unhealthy, high-caloric snacks during school breaks among elementary school children aged 9–10. The basic assumption is that the health-enhancing effects of eating more fruits and vegetables will become so habitual — and enjoyable — that children will naturally avoid sugary snacks, providing a way to address obesity before its onset.

There are some quantitative difficulties within the approach acknowledged by the authors, in that the data was self-reported and the Dutch government had already designated the intervention cities (p. 614). While there were no unrealistic demands placed on participants, perhaps not enough methodological detail was provided for a two-year longitudinal study relying on self-reported data. Even though self-reported data is necessary in many circumstances due to budget constraints or overall research design, there are known problems with its use in terms of validity, extrapolation, and tabulation of data sets (Gonyea, 2005).

Literature Review

For children and adults, eating well involves two things: a balanced approach to nutrition and the proper mindset to make healthy food choices in appropriate amounts. A balanced approach to nutrition does not require depriving oneself of everything enjoyable — it simply means eating in moderation and, when possible, including more fresh fruits and vegetables, limiting processed foods and sugars, choosing whole foods, limiting alcohol, and especially limiting sugary drinks and candies that offer only empty calories and little nutritional value.

More than anything else, childhood obesity is a direct result of lifestyle choices and overeating. Children today tend toward highly refined products with heavy sugar content, sugary sodas, and snack foods high in carbohydrates but low in nutritional value. When combined with an increasingly sedentary lifestyle — playing games online instead of engaging in physical activity — the result is stored body fat and a recurring cycle of low energy. Most children, in fact, fail to exercise because they prefer stationary activities: computer games, internet surfing, text messaging, and watching television (Lluch et al., 2000).

The actual literature review in the study was rather cursory, primarily focusing on earlier studies indicating that taste preferences are one of the primary determinants of food choices among children. That said, some studies show that the key to increasing fruit and vegetable intake is repeated exposure to a wide variety of seasonal products combined with an educational program demonstrating the nutritional value of natural snacks (Wardle et al., 2003). Still, the study contains an ample bibliography and list of further reference materials that focus on the manner in which restrictive dietary considerations can lead to more positive outcomes (Gonzales et al., 2009), as well as the ways in which children are taught about food and nutrition and how they approach healthier snack choices (Baranowski et al., 1999).
