By concentrating resources on what the organization does best, it can compete more effectively without the overhead burden of maintaining every internal function.
Flat Structured Lattice Organizations
In another emerging model, known as "flat structured lattice organizations," there is almost no corporate hierarchy and nearly everyone operates as an equal (Yildiz 2012). This structure is particularly well-suited to smaller and mid-sized organizations. A relatively non-hierarchical arrangement with focused business interests allows the organization to reduce a number of structural costs. There is no need to spend money enforcing official corporate policies or administering complex hierarchies designed for bureaucratic purposes. Employees can work largely online in a relatively unsupervised context.
In one internet-based organization cited in the article, there are no official leadership titles — all employees are called "associates," and the organization's focus is on fulfilling its mission rather than reinforcing hierarchical divisions.
