This paper presents a structured professional career action plan for a recent Bachelor of Science graduate in healthcare administration. The author identifies three progressive career goals — securing entry-level employment, advancing to a health administrator role, and making a broader community impact — and conducts a candid self-assessment of professional and personal strengths and weaknesses. The plan also outlines an ideal next position as a practice administrator, required competencies, compensation expectations, preferred company culture, acceptable compromises, and a gap analysis identifying credentials and experience still needed. Supporting documents including a résumé and cover letter are incorporated, along with networking strategies, interviewing techniques, and a periodic career audit schedule.
I am a student majoring in science at a university, and upon graduation I would like to use my skills to make a difference in the communities I serve, including my home community. These are the main factors I will consider as I advance my career. My career development will be guided by several goals, each requiring varying periods of time to achieve.
The most important of all is to make an impact for humanity over the course of my work in the health sector. I have carefully considered my path and understand that I must begin at a particular entry point and progress steadily to become a highly qualified and successful professional in healthcare. I believe this progression will be essential not only for making an impact on the many individuals I serve, but also for influencing policies and decisions that promote better access to health for all people. The following are the goals I wish to achieve in the immediate and longer-term future.
My first goal is to secure employment with a reputable institution that will enable me to gain experience and widen my knowledge base in the health sector. This is a short-term goal, as it is aimed at providing a platform for advancing my career. By securing a job, I will have a starting point from which to establish myself in the health sector and slowly advance toward my later goals (Rothwell, 2005).
My second goal is to advance my career and become a health administrator. This is a long-term goal that will require me to further my qualifications by pursuing a master's degree, which will give me the additional competitive advantage needed to secure a position as a health administrator. Being a healthcare administrator is important because it will allow me to have a wider impact on people's lives and contribute my opinions to many areas affecting service delivery. This goal comes second because I must first secure a position and establish myself before advancing to an administrative role.
My third goal is to be recognized in health services provision. I aim to touch the lives of as many people as possible by providing quality and life-changing services through the teams I work with. Furthermore, I plan to establish a health facility in my community to ensure that these services are accessible locally, thereby enhancing my efforts to provide quality healthcare to the community (Rothwell, 2005).
Bachelor of Science degree in healthcare administration: This is one of my key strengths. The degree indicates that I have completed formal training and possess the knowledge and certification required to work as a healthcare administrator.
Strong academic performance: My strong academic record is evident in the honors I received during my training. This demonstrates my dedication to healthcare and my commitment to acquiring the knowledge needed to be an effective manager. Healthcare administration is highly complex, requiring an administrator to understand key concepts and operational procedures in order to effectively handle and respond to issues within a health facility. Having developed this foundation will allow me to carry out my duties with effectiveness and efficiency (Lock, 1992).
Effective interpersonal and leadership skills: These are two important qualities that any administrator must possess. I have developed these skills over a long period through education and interaction with people in both leadership and everyday settings. Since an administrator is also a leader, these attributes are essential for guiding a team effectively.
Excellent oral and written communication and analytical skills: Communication is critical in healthcare, as miscommunication leads to errors with serious consequences. Poor communication — whether spoken or written — must be avoided in all instances. It is therefore necessary for an administrator to communicate clearly with team members and other healthcare providers to prevent errors from occurring.
Inadequate experience in the health sector: As a recent graduate, I will not yet have extensive experience in real-world situations. This will affect my decision-making, as I will need to consult others on many matters. However, my internship experience will give me confidence and a foundation for handling routine situations as I build knowledge and experience over time.
Tendency to go beyond what is required to meet an objective: In my eagerness to help, I often read more, conduct additional research, and spend more time than necessary on a case to ensure nothing is overlooked. While this reflects a strong work ethic, it can affect efficiency (Powers, 2005).
Over-passionate about work: My passion has made me selfless, putting patients first and dedicating my time to gaining and applying knowledge in service of the community. I frequently engage in charity events during my free time because I believe health service is my calling.
Perfectionism and attention to detail: I am always careful to ensure that every procedure is carried out according to established standards. I frequently review standard operating procedures and guidelines to ensure I am handling matters correctly. This dedication sometimes causes me to take longer than necessary to complete tasks.
I am a recent graduate holding a Bachelor of Science degree in healthcare administration, awarded with honors. I am a hardworking and self-motivated individual who believes that a reputable organization will provide me with the experience and knowledge to grow further in my career. I have strong interpersonal and leadership skills that will make me a valuable contributor to any team. My commitment to quality and attention to detail ensure that I approach every responsibility with diligence and professionalism.
Based on my self-assessment, my ideal next position is that of a practice administrator. A practice administrator carries responsibilities similar to those of a healthcare administrator, but at a slightly lower organizational level. This position will therefore provide me with the necessary experience and exposure I need before advancing to a full healthcare administrator role (Lock, 1991).
Professionalism and knowledge of financial and computer systems: These competencies are essential for conducting analyses and managing financial matters related to organizational operations.
Communication and relationship management: This position requires constant dialogue, consultation, and engagement with physicians and other healthcare providers, making strong communication and relationship-building skills indispensable.
