Another physical method involves stealing credit cards, identification documents, and bankcards directly from a victim's purse or wallet. Possessing these items allows a thief to pose as the victim and obtain credit using their identity. Thieves can also redirect a victim's mail by submitting a change-of-address form, enabling them to intercept personal correspondence and financial statements.
By posing as a property owner or another party authorized to request a credit report, a thief can also obtain the victim's credit history. Additionally, thieves can use a contactless credit card and bankcard reader to harvest personal information wirelessly from RFID-enabled cards. When this method is used, the victim is typically unaware that any theft has occurred — unlike the physical stealing of a purse or wallet, which is immediately noticeable.

Hacking may also involve the use of malware, spyware, or Trojan horse programs, which allow hackers to gain covert access to a victim's computer or network and extract personal information without detection.
