This nursing school application essay presents a candidate's motivations for pursuing a nursing degree, grounding them in both personal values and professional opportunity. The author discusses a natural inclination toward helping others as a primary driver, alongside the economic appeal of a healthcare career amid a shrinking post-graduate job market. The essay also engages with a 2008 UK study suggesting that empathy declines in nursing students over the course of their training, and the author uses this finding to articulate a personal commitment to consciously preserving compassionate care throughout their education and professional practice.
As a nursing student, I hope to study nursing science for the express purpose of pursuing my vocational goal of becoming a professional nurse. It is also my hope to contribute to the broader university community by actively participating in student affairs that improve the experience of my fellow students.
My desire to enter the nursing field is two-fold. First, nursing is likely the most productive possible application of my natural desire to help others. Second, the current economic situation has made the nursing profession an even more attractive option than it already was by virtue of my long-standing life plans.
The demand for skilled healthcare providers is increasing rapidly due in large part to the aging American population — a trend that is expected to continue and even accelerate over the next decade. In that respect, nursing represents an ideal fit for me, because it was already an opportunity to apply my natural desire to care for others before economic factors made it even more compelling.
While so many other industries and professions are experiencing a significant reduction in demand, the healthcare sector continues to grow. Now that domestic economic factors have reshaped much of the post-graduate employment landscape, the nursing field is only a better choice for me. The convergence of personal calling and professional stability makes this path both meaningful and practical.
The global and domestic need for nurses is well-documented, and the United States in particular faces a growing shortage of qualified practitioners as the baby boom generation ages into greater need for care. Entering this profession now positions me to be part of the solution to a serious and ongoing public health challenge.
