Piaget hypothesized that there were four main cognitive stages in human development, corresponding to four successive modes of knowledge. Throughout each stage, children were theorized to think and reason in qualitatively different ways. These stages, along with their estimated age ranges, are: the sensorimotor period (0–2 years), the preoperational period (2–7 years), the concrete operational period (7–11 years), and the formal operational period (11–12 years onward). Piaget noted that the achievement of each new mode of thinking would not necessarily be simultaneous across all domains of thought (Goswami, 2001). Rather, he argued that the timing of the stages could be highly variable and that some overlap might occur within a given period. As a result, the ages Piaget assigned to the various cognitive stages are intended only as estimates (Goswami, 2001).
The Sensorimotor Stage
In the sensorimotor stage, the child is primarily concerned with developing motor control and gaining knowledge about the physical world (Evans, 1973). This stage holds that thought is grounded chiefly in action. When an infant performs an action — such as grasping a bottle or learning to roll from side to side — they are learning more about their body and how it relates to themselves and their environment. Piaget found that during this stage, infants engage in what he called circular reactions: behaviors that a child repeats frequently in order to better understand the physical world. These circular reactions are further divided into three subcategories: primary circular reactions, secondary circular reactions, and tertiary circular reactions.
Primary circular reactions develop between months one and four after birth. These responses are initially triggered by chance (Cook-Cottone, 2004). Once they occur, the child's curiosity is engaged, and the action is repeated so that the child can better understand what is happening. These activities are reflex-driven and typically involve the child's own body — for example, repeatedly bringing objects to the mouth or continuously kicking the legs.
Secondary circular reactions emerge around four months of age and continue until the child is approximately one year old. These behaviors depend on events in the child's environment (Maxwell, 2008) and differ from primary circular reactions in that they are guided by the child's intentions rather than pure reflexes. The child explores the physical world in this stage by accidentally producing an event and then attempting to recreate it.
The third category, tertiary circular reactions, is characterized by the child behaving like a young scientist in interaction with the environment. During this stage, the child deliberately acts in ways that sustain interest — for example, exploring a particular toy more intently in order to understand it better, or striking different objects together to hear the varied sounds each produces. A particularly notable development during this stage is the emergence of deferred imitation, in which a child reproduces a behavior observed at an earlier time.
Criticisms of Piaget's Theory
Jean Piaget was the first theorist to develop a comprehensive account of cognitive development focused exclusively on children, and he is widely regarded as the founding figure of developmental psychology. However, the pioneering nature of his work also means that it has been subject to extensive scrutiny by subsequent generations of researchers.
A major criticism of Piaget's theory is that he consistently underestimated children's abilities. Other developmental researchers tested his claims and found that object permanence is acquired earlier than Piaget had indicated. Their experimental data further suggested that different types of object permanence are understood at different times (Hinde & Perry, 2007) — a gradual pattern of acquisition that contradicts Piaget's account.
A further criticism concerns the age ranges Piaget assigned to each stage and sub-stage of development. Piaget presented these ages as relatively fixed, yet they can readily be shown to be imprecise whenever a child from a given age group performs above or below the expected developmental level. The studies of Robert Ennis offer a clear illustration: contrary to Piaget's claim that children under 11 to 12 years of age are incapable of hypothetical reasoning, these studies suggest that children as young as 5 to 6 years old possess deductive inferential reasoning skills (Lourenco & Machado, 1996).
Conclusion: Piaget's Lasting Influence
Piaget remains the most influential figure in modern child development research, despite the criticisms raised by more recent scholars. Some researchers argue that children's development across the four stages is more uneven and less predictable than Piaget believed. His methodology was also limited by his reliance on behavioral observation and verbal interview techniques, which constrained what could be inferred about infants and young children. More recent studies using newer methods have generated additional concepts and frameworks. Nevertheless, Piaget continues to receive well-deserved recognition for the foundational contributions he made to our understanding of cognitive development.
