Numerous studies have been conducted to advance clear understanding of children's cognitive development. Among the most prominent contributions are the theories of Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky, whose findings have served as central reference points in academic discourse regarding early childhood cognition.
This paper explores both theories as fundamental and worthy guides in understanding early childhood cognitive development. Although both theories offer explicable analyses of behaviors and learning abilities at each developmental stage, they hold divergent opinions on how those behaviors are formed. Jean Piaget (1896–1980) attributed a child's development and learning process to self-discovery and natural abilities, while Lev Vygotsky (1896–1934) believed that a child's learning abilities and mental development are facilitated by the immediate socio-cultural environment. This paper focuses particularly on early childhood as presented in the preoperational stage of Piaget's theory, and on information processing, language development, and individual differences in mental development as established in Vygotsky's sociocultural theory.
Jean Piaget's Cognitive Development Theory
According to Piaget's theory, sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operations, and formal operations are the four universal and consecutive stages through which a child's cognitive development is formed, from infancy to young adulthood. By "universal," Piaget meant that this framework applies everywhere and operates the same way in every child. The sensorimotor developmental stage spans from birth to age two. Piaget called this stage sensorimotor because it is the stage of infancy in which a child "uses senses and motor abilities to understand the world" (Boeree, 1999). An infant's sensorimotor phase can be categorized into four sub-stages: primary circular reactions, secondary circular reactions, tertiary circular reactions, and mental representation.
A child's first to fourth month constitutes the first sub-stage, during which activities are limited to the abilities and skills the child was born with. By default, infants suck, look, grasp, listen, and perform other tasks within their capacity at this stage. If they attempt any of these behaviors and derive pleasure from them, they continually develop those reactions as regular activities. During the secondary circular reactions sub-stage, which spans the fourth to the eighth month, an infant moves beyond body-centered activities to engage with objects in the surrounding environment. At this sub-stage, children take pleasure in repeatedly clinging to toys, clothes, and other items they can reach. The secondary circular reactions phase usually extends through the twelfth month, sometimes referred to as the coordinating secondary schemes phase. At this point, children can "remember things, and may even try to find things they can no longer see" (Boeree, 1999). During the tertiary circular reactions and mental representation sub-stages (the twelfth to the twenty-fourth month), a child makes increasingly sophisticated use of all the skills acquired during the earlier sub-stages. At this point, children have developed the ability to solve simple tasks when playing with toys and peers.
The Preoperational Stage in Detail
The preoperational stage immediately follows the sensorimotor stage in human development. According to Piaget's theory, a child's preoperational stage spans ages two to seven. At this stage, a child's traits are characterized by "an increase in language ability (with over-generalizations), symbolic thought, egocentric perspective, and limited logic" (Ojose, 2008). This is one of the most crucial developmental stages of life. The key elements of the preoperational stage include centration, egocentrism, symbolic representation, pretence, and animism (McLeod, 2018). The attributes of this stage have been central to the principles guiding early childhood education and cognition, and it is widely regarded as the stage in which personalities are formed. Although the child has developed advanced abilities compared to the sensorimotor stage, he or she is still limited in logic and affected by centration. This low level of logic can result in: connecting unrelated events, viewing objects as possessing life, inability to understand other people's points of view, and being unable to reverse arithmetic operations (Ojose, 2008).
Centration, as established in Piaget's theory, is the "tendency to focus on only one aspect of a situation at one time" (McLeod, 2008). It is the major characteristic of the preoperational stage and is largely responsible for a child's limited logic and restricted task-solving skills. Centration is highly exhibited at this stage in both social and non-social contexts. For example, Boeree (1999) explained that a child within this age bracket might find it difficult to make sense of a simple statement such as "Your father is my husband." While the child may understand what "father" and "husband" mean when discussed separately, connecting the two concepts in a single statement may exceed their mental capability.
Egocentrism at the preoperational stage is usually reflected in children's communications. This characteristic dominates their thinking and verbalization, restricting them from seeing things from another person's perspective. According to Piaget, a child at this stage assumes that everyone around them feels, hears, and sees things in exactly the same way they do. Play is another notable feature of this stage. Although a child can be found playing in the same setting as other children, the egocentric attribute remains dominant even within shared spaces. Children show individualism by engaging in parallel play, as they "play next to others rather than with them" (McLeod, 2008). The verbalization at this stage functions not for genuine communication but simply to externalize their thinking.
The preoperational phase is also characterized by what Piaget described as the inability to conserve liquid volume. For example, if a child within this age bracket is offered the choice between two glasses of juice — a smaller volume in a tall, thin glass and a larger volume in a short, wide glass — the child will most likely choose the taller glass. The higher liquid level in the thin glass leads the child to believe it contains more juice.
Animism is another feature of the preoperational stage. It is the belief that inanimate objects possess consciousness and the ability to perform the same tasks as living things. Children exhibit animism in their view of surrounding objects — for example, a child might be seen talking to a doll, getting angry at the floor after falling on it, or believing "that the stars twinkle in the sky because they are happy" ("Piaget's Theory of"). Artificialism is a related element of this stage — the belief "that environmental characteristics can be attributed to human actions or interventions" ("Piaget's Theory of"). For example, a child at this stage might say the rain is falling because someone is pouring water outside.
Piaget established that these critical features of the preoperational stage are responsible for children's limited mental capabilities at this age, and that their comprehension cannot extend beyond these mental limitations. The preoperational stage often shapes the subsequent concrete operations stage (ages 7 to 11) and formal operations stage (age 11 through adulthood). However, a child's cognitive development cannot be fully understood from the perspective of inbuilt tendency alone. Environmental factors also play a significant role in a child's growth, making Vygotsky's theory a necessary complement to broaden the scope of early childhood development studies.

Together, they provide a more complete picture of early childhood cognitive development than either framework could offer alone.
