Furthermore, Piaget's work cast doubt on the longstanding assumption that children are simply less competent thinkers than adults. Schemas: According to McLeod (2009), a schema refers to a unit of knowledge stored in the brain that, in combination with other units, gives an individual an understanding of a particular aspect, phenomenon, or object. It is these stored knowledge units that determine how an individual responds to new information or stimuli. A state of cognitive equilibrium exists when one's schemas can adequately explain a new aspect of the world (Sigelman & Rider, 2014). When existing schemas cannot interpret new information, disequilibrium arises, and the adaptation processes of accommodation and assimilation act to restore balance by incorporating the new information as a revised or new schema.

Assimilation: This is the process of using pre-existing schemas to interpret new stimuli and information. A child who has had some experience with fish, for instance, is likely to call a whale a "fish" the first time they see one, because they apply a pre-existing schema representing their knowledge of fish.

Accommodation: The child in the above example may notice that the whale is larger than any fish they have seen before, and may be prompted to revise their understanding because the existing schema does not adequately account for the new information. This process of adapting one's schema to fit a new stimulus is referred to as accommodation.

Equilibration: This refers to the driving force behind the learning process — the mechanism that regulates assimilation and accommodation in order to restore cognitive balance.
