From the perspective of most interested parties and scholars, technology has led to a boom in education. Whether through laptops, tablets, smartphones, or other devices, technology is widely seen as a way to supplement or create learning opportunities and thus improve the educational outcomes of those who use it. However, some thinkers are far less optimistic about technology's effect on students and education in general. Samuel Freedman and Maggie Jackson, just to name two, argue that technology can be the antithesis of an educational panacea — that it creates situations where students become distracted or even difficult to educate. While technology can and should assist in education, the means and methods by which it is used need to be carefully managed, or it will make things worse rather than better.

The Case Against Unmanaged Technology in Education

As noted above, there is broad agreement that technology is ultimately a benefit to education. However, more than one corner of the academic and media world is considerably more cautious and muted in its optimism. Some researchers assert that multitasking — splitting attention between technology and other activities such as listening to classmates, following a teacher's lesson, or completing in-class tasks — actually detracts from learning and leads to conditions that are far from optimal for students.

Beyond divided attention in the classroom, students becoming absorbed at home or at school with technology uses unrelated to learning is also a significant concern. Gaming and streaming video are just two examples of how devices intended for educational purposes can be redirected toward entertainment.

One of the voices pointing to this problem is Samuel Freedman. In a 2007 article, he makes the point powerfully, especially regarding distractions that educators should be able to control. The article opens by describing a teacher who maintains a strict no-phone policy in his classroom but discovers that a student has apparently violated the rule. Two dramatic twists follow. First, the teacher seizes the phone and smashes it with a hammer. Second — and more importantly — the offending student was in on the whole thing. The scene was entirely scripted. Despite the theater involved, the teacher's goal was to send an unambiguous message: external, technology-based distractions would not be tolerated in his classroom.

The concern driving that teacher's actions is not fiction. Older generations tend to view cell phones as functional tools. Younger people, by contrast, often experience the same devices primarily as social and entertainment platforms. The propensity of young people to use their devices when they should not be is, accordingly, very real (Freedman).

Distraction, Shallow Communication, and Academic Performance

The other primary source this paper draws upon is Maggie Jackson and her book Distracted. She makes a related but distinct argument. Her concern can be compared to the message of Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence": that technology has driven human communication and interaction toward something increasingly shallow and hollow. Rather than engaging in rich, substantive exchanges, people — including students — participate in interactions that are polluted by distraction and stripped of depth. Learning suffers as a result, because this same dynamic has infiltrated the educational environment. Communications are becoming more superficial, and academic engagement is weakening alongside them (Jackson).

When it comes to cell phones specifically, even college-age students display a measurable problem splitting their attention between their devices and their academic responsibilities. Rather than simply theorizing about this, researchers have conducted formal studies — complete with defined hypotheses, student samples, and controlled testing — to examine the relationship between cell phone use and academic performance (Lepp, Barkey & Karpinski).

Conclusion

The idea of eliminating technology from the educational sphere entirely is an overreaction and is not what this paper advocates. However, technology used in the wrong way or at the wrong time is clearly having a negative effect on society, its relationships, and the quality of communication and interaction — and the educational sphere is no exception. Teachers need to establish firm expectations and make clear to students that while staying connected to parents for genuine emergencies is reasonable, smartphones and tablets must not be used in ways that are external to, or inhibiting of, the learning process. Technology's promise in education is real, but so are its risks, and responsible management of that technology is the essential middle ground.
