One of Tesla's greatest strengths is its brand identity. The brand is synonymous with quality, style, and luxury. As one of the premier auto manufacturers in the world, consumers typically resonate well with the brand and view it positively. This has allowed the company to price its products at the premium end of the market, thereby improving cash flow and margins. As a premium brand, Tesla is well positioned to capture the luxury segment of the electric vehicle market (Thompson, 2020).

In addition, consumers are increasingly willing to pay premium prices for vehicles that support environmental sustainability and help preserve the planet for future generations. This emphasis on enhanced governance and ESG standards has acted as a tailwind for Tesla. Consumers are now far more willing to pay higher prices to engage with a cause they believe in. Tesla's mission to significantly reduce the world's reliance on fossil fuels resonates strongly in this regard, as does its focus on renewable power generation.

Finally, governments around the world are incentivizing the production of electric vehicles through various programs, grants, and tax credits. These incentives are designed not only to lower the cost of purchase for consumers but also to reduce the cost of manufacturing for corporations. This dual-pronged approach allows Tesla to produce cars more efficiently and to sell them at more affordable prices. This, in turn, enhances EV adoption rates and increases overall demand.

Weaknesses and Industry Structure

These strengths are counteracted by weaknesses heavily related to the overall industry structure. The automotive industry is highly capital-intensive, requiring large amounts of investment to maintain ever-increasing levels of production. These required capital investments ultimately lower profitability, as capital is tied up in property, plant, and equipment rather than being returned to shareholders through stock buybacks and dividends. Another significant weakness is that the company is heavily tied to commodity prices and global supply chains. Commodity prices are rising due to inflation, which places pricing pressure on the firm. Because Tesla cannot easily pass all cost increases on to consumers, inflation can ultimately dampen profitability and cash flows (Tully, 2020).
