Introduction to Infant Visual Development
Researchers have found that initial assumptions about infants and their visual prowess were in fact not accurate (Siegler, DeLoache, Eisenberg, & Saffran, 2014). Babies do, in fact, have better vision than was first supposed — their vision is certainly not "barely functional," as early researchers assumed. It has been found that infants begin to explore the world around them visually within minutes of birth. While it is true that their visual clarity is not as sharp as that of adults, research has shown that infants gain increasing visual competency within the first month of life.
To investigate infant vision, a variety of techniques were needed, since babies are unable to understand or follow instructions during experimental procedures. Robert Fantz (1961) developed the preferential-looking technique to study the visual attention of infants. For this test, Fantz displayed two visual stimuli side by side on a screen for the infant to view. The test involves determining which image the infant pays more attention to, indicating that the infant can distinguish between the images and prefers one over the other. It was also found that infants prefer having an image to look at rather than being presented with a blank screen (Siegler, DeLoache, Eisenberg, & Saffran, 2014).
Methods for Studying Infant Vision
Another method used to study an infant's sensory and perceptual development is the habituation method. In this approach, infants are presented with a repeated image until they show signs of boredom, after which a new image is displayed. An increase in the infant's response then indicates that he or she can distinguish between the old and new image. This method also allows researchers to measure an infant's contrast sensitivity. This sensitivity is low at birth because of the immaturity of the cones and the fact that light-sensitive nerve cells are not yet fully developed (Banks & Dannemiller, 1987).
Early Visual Limitations and Face Preferences
The poor contrast sensitivity that infants have at birth also makes it difficult for them to focus on nearby objects. They display jerky eye movements and cannot maintain focus on a single object for long, especially when it is close to them (Kellman & Arterberry, 2006). Despite these initial limitations, research has found that infants prefer their mother's face over that of a stranger (Haith, Bergman, & Moore, 1977; Milewski, 1976). By two months of age, infants are able to distinguish finer details in faces and other patterns (Maurer & Salapatek, 1976).
