Consequently, after leaving high school, most individuals on the ASD spectrum struggle to hold stable job roles or pursue a consistent career path.
Cognitive and Sensory Challenges
The cognitive challenges that individuals on the ASD spectrum encounter include difficulty recognizing and empathizing with other people's feelings, limited awareness of nonverbal cues, and trouble observing social norms. Due to sensory challenges, these individuals may require specific sensory input to process information effectively (Murza, 2016). Some individuals on the ASD spectrum also face motor function challenges that may limit their ability to learn and master skills such as writing, physical coordination, and participation in activities requiring movement. These challenges — whether experienced individually or in combination — can inhibit students' ability to adjust their thinking patterns or learning strategies, thereby limiting their intellectual development (Malone, 2021).
