What is America?

America as a topic of academic study spans nearly every discipline, from history and political science to public health, literature, and cultural studies. Its breadth makes it a common subject in introductory college courses as well as upper-level seminars, where students are asked to examine the nation's political institutions, social tensions, and evolving identity. What makes the topic academically rich is precisely its complexity: the United States has served as a site of competing visions, from debates over economic policy and national power to questions of individual rights and social change. Papers touching on figures like Edward M. Bannister, Sam Patch, and Heather Whitestone illustrate how individual stories can illuminate broader national narratives.

The papers archived under this topic reflect a wide range of approaches. Historical analyses trace developments across defined periods, such as America's rise to world power during the Gilded Age or the military origins of the republic from 1763 to 1789. Policy-focused essays examine specific controversies, including welfare from a libertarian perspective, same-sex marriage, and the Cuba-related Helms-Burton legislation. Other papers take a social or public health angle, addressing issues like childhood obesity or health promotion strategies. Comparative and philosophical approaches also appear, as in contrasting the theories of David Hume and William James within an American intellectual context.

A strong essay on America establishes a focused thesis rather than attempting to survey the entire nation's history or character. Evidence drawn from primary sources, policy documents, historical events, or specific case studies carries more weight than broad generalizations. The most common pitfall is treating "America" as a monolithic subject — the strongest papers define a precise time period, population, or issue and argue a clear, defensible position about it.

Gender roles and inequality in Mad Men's 1960s advertising world
The cultural forms examined through the television show Mad Men permits the viewer to interrogate and transform their conventional understandings of the forms (Stokes). The series is critically sophisticated and also historically knowledgeable about the period and the advertising industry (Stokes). The treatment of gender roles slips easily between irony and parody, increasing the viewers' enjoyment and easing some of the discomfiture that is inescapable in the viewing. The show is mythologized nostalgia more than a postmodern reflection of the conventions of the time. Certainly the show is meta-textual in both presentation and reflection of society, but it simultaneously highlights the Anglo-male centricity of the period. And it is through that lens that we come to understand the "treatment" of women.

Speaking skills and reading ability in ESOL sixth-grade students
This study explores the speaking skills of ESOL students and relates it to their ability to read in English. This study attempts to determine how and to what degree speaking skills affect the reading abilities of ESOL students in both positive and negative ways. It demonstrates that a growth in conversation skills in the English language is positively related to an increase in the reading abilities of ESOL students. The hypothesis is that reading and speaking skills are interrelated and that there is a positive relationship. The methodology behind the study is based on surveys of ESOL teachers, ten parents of ESOL students, and the comparison of two groups of ESOL 6th grade learners. The students will be divided into two groups based on whether they use their original languages in the classroom or not. The population is selected through convenience sampling. This study, I hope, will reveal a positive relationship between the amount of time ESOL learners use English in the classroom and their proficiency to read aloud in English.

Racial disparities in American capital punishment and criminal justice
Racism has always been a defining feature of the American criminal justice system, including racial profiling, disparities in arrests convictions and sentencing between minorities and whites, and in the use of the death penalty. Racial profiling against blacks, immigrants and minorities has always existed in the American criminal justice system, as has the belief that minorities in general and blacks in particular are always more likely to commit crimes. American society and its legal system were founded on white supremacy going back to the colonial period, and critical race criminology would always consider these historical factors as well as the legal means to counter them.

Profit motives and patient flows in privatized healthcare
Since the government had started the practice of handing over major departments to private sector like health care and education, these areas are now more focused on employing techniques that can draw major profit flow. Bell Hooks' critique of liberal feminism in "Feminism is for everybody"
Biological determinism or essentialism holds that there is a natural and genetic difference between men and women and from a patriarchal viewpoint finds that women are intellectually and physically inferior and should be relegated to child rearing and domestic duties. Liberal feminism, often called middle class feminism calls for equal economic, voting and citizenship rights within the present system, unlike radical or socialist feminism that demand the overthrow of capitalism, imperialism, and patriarchy, perhaps even in a revolution. Multiracial feminists also wish to build a global feminist movement that crosses the lines of color, language, religion and nationality, instead of simply being known as a white, middle class Western movement that benefits only privileged or upwardly mobile women.
