What is America?

America as a topic of academic study spans nearly every discipline, from history and political science to public health, literature, and cultural studies. Its breadth makes it a common subject in introductory college courses as well as upper-level seminars, where students are asked to examine the nation's political institutions, social tensions, and evolving identity. What makes the topic academically rich is precisely its complexity: the United States has served as a site of competing visions, from debates over economic policy and national power to questions of individual rights and social change. Papers touching on figures like Edward M. Bannister, Sam Patch, and Heather Whitestone illustrate how individual stories can illuminate broader national narratives.

The papers archived under this topic reflect a wide range of approaches. Historical analyses trace developments across defined periods, such as America's rise to world power during the Gilded Age or the military origins of the republic from 1763 to 1789. Policy-focused essays examine specific controversies, including welfare from a libertarian perspective, same-sex marriage, and the Cuba-related Helms-Burton legislation. Other papers take a social or public health angle, addressing issues like childhood obesity or health promotion strategies. Comparative and philosophical approaches also appear, as in contrasting the theories of David Hume and William James within an American intellectual context.

A strong essay on America establishes a focused thesis rather than attempting to survey the entire nation's history or character. Evidence drawn from primary sources, policy documents, historical events, or specific case studies carries more weight than broad generalizations. The most common pitfall is treating "America" as a monolithic subject — the strongest papers define a precise time period, population, or issue and argue a clear, defensible position about it.

Drug Use, Crime, and the Case Against Legalization
Crime has become a very contentious issue of late, due in part to worldwide economic turmoil. Individual are now without employment or a stable source of income. Wages are dropping, deficits are increasing, and individuals are without work. As a result of these disparities, crime rates tend to rise as individuals justify such behavior within themselves. This is particularly true of individuals with recurring credit problems, mortgages due, or in the worst instances, families. These individuals, although they don't have a stable source of income, must still pay its debtors or creditors. As such, crime tends to rise during periods of economic or social unrest (Hugo, 1987). A broad view of the world provides a great application of this theory in a practical sense. Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans. In many instances, individuals stole television, electronics, and other valuables from neighbor's homes. Police, in one incident beat an innocent 64 year old man (Flaherty, 2007).

Green Tea and Obesity: Can Camellia Sinensis Aid Weight Loss?
A long range of studies have concluded that green tea has obesity-reducing effects. Chung-Hua et al (2008) however concluded otherwise indicating no effect through their double blind controlled study on 100 obese women. Nonetheless, most studies seem to show an impact. Properties of green tea that may be responsible for this FAS-inhibiting outcome have been variously said to be the (?)-CG (catechin gallate) that is a compound of the GTE (green tea extract). If green tea does indeed have this affect that would be a huge discovery. Further studies however need to be conducted in order to verify this hypothesis. These studies need to be experimental in the fullest sense conducted also on large samples of people within a sufficiently large enough period of time and on participants who have received no other weight-control. With these and other controls implemented, we can further test the theory of whether or not green tea has a preventive effect in controlling obesity.
