What is Contrast?

Like a compare and contrast essay, a contrast essay asks you to choose two or more items and ideas and write about them.  However, instead of highlighting similarities between the two things, a contrast essay will describe how they are different.  It is important to note that, in order to have an effective contrast essay, there must be some similarities or shared middle ground between the things being contrasted.  A contrast essay that focused on the differences between a roller skate and the planet Jupiter would contain a lot of contrast, but would be almost incoherent.  However, a contrast essay that focused on the differences in Earth and Jupiter would start from the point where they are similar (planets in the same solar system) and then highlight differences.

Gender Roles and Identity in Atwood's The Edible Woman
Margaret Atwood's novel "The Edible Woman" was written in the 1960s, a time period when society favored patriarchal attitudes and when it was perfectly normal for men to be dominant members of the social order. It is very likely that she designed this novel in an attempt to raise public awareness concerning the wrongness associated with sticking to traditional gender roles. Atwood practically wrote this text with the purpose to have her readers understand that society had reached a level where it was much more complex than it had been in the past and where people needed to change their attitudes in order to be able to be an active part of the social order.

Keats' "Ode on a Grecian Urn" and the Exekias Amphora
This is a 3-page paper about Keat's poem "Ode on a Grecian Urn." However, this is a different type of paper than just an analysis of the poem. The essay is about a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and an encounter with a cultural artifact that enhanced understanding of the poem. The essay weaves in and out of discussing the poem, alternating between it and the description of the vase.
