What is Theory?

Theory sits at the foundation of nearly every academic discipline, providing the conceptual frameworks through which scholars interpret evidence, explain behavior, and predict outcomes. Students encounter theoretical analysis in courses ranging from sociology and psychology to economics, nursing, and philosophy. What makes theory academically compelling is its demand for both abstract reasoning and practical application — a strong theoretical argument must hold up against real-world evidence while remaining internally consistent. The breadth of the subject means students must engage with foundational thinkers and frameworks across fields, from sociological perspectives associated with Marx, Weber, and Durkheim to cognitive development theories connected with Vygotsky and Piaget, economic models like neoclassical theory and William Ouchi's Theory Z, and nursing frameworks such as Orem's theory of self-care deficit and Margaret Newman's nursing theory.

The papers archived on this topic reflect a wide range of analytical approaches. Comparative analysis is especially common, with writers placing two or more theories side by side to assess their strengths, limitations, and explanatory power. Other papers take a developmental or stage-based approach, examining frameworks like Robert Selman's stages of friendship or Jane Loevinger's stages of ego development. Case-study and applied approaches also appear frequently, particularly in nursing and finance contexts, where writers test theoretical models against specific patient situations, clinical interventions, or investment strategies.

A strong essay on theory begins with a clearly scoped thesis that does more than summarize — it argues for a theory's relevance, superiority, or limitation in a defined context. Evidence drawn from peer-reviewed journals carries the most weight, particularly when it connects abstract principles to observable outcomes. The most common pitfall to avoid is treating theory as fixed doctrine; examiners expect writers to engage critically, acknowledging where a theory's assumptions may not hold.

Personal Development Plan for Career and Skills Growth
Careers are sometimes as fleeting as the dreams that encompass them. Often, individuals, in search of a career dream of financial security, the ability to purchase a dream home, or obtaining material possessions that may showcase their wealth or status. There is no lack of ambition and fortitude within individuals in this regard. We all want to achieve success is some form or another. We all aspire for greatness, albeit in varying degrees and capacities (Maslow, 1996). What is lacking however is a concrete method in which to achieve ones desired financial and career goals. The Bureau of Labor Statistics in recent report indicated that individuals change careers approximately 11 times during their lifetime. Many jobs are becoming obsolete as they are either replaced or outsourced overseas. Many jobs are cyclical in nature and thus are only needed during periods of economic euphoria. No matter what the theory is however, one constant will always remain. Individuals need to utilize their talents and skillsets to maximize their earnings potential (Druker, 1999). In order to achieve this success, I believe it prudent to develop a personal development plan outlining an individual's goals and objectives. This resource is very important as it provides the foundation for the individual's future objectives. Personal development is of particular interest in the midst of our current economic turmoil (Ibarra, 2003). Now, perhaps more than any other period in history, development of individual skills will determine financial success. As such, I personally have made significant strides in my development with respect to my work and individual life. Currently, as is the case with many recessions, companies have a tendency to lay off mass amounts of labor. This has occurred throughout many of the developed nations including, but not limited to, America, Europe, and Japan. This requires a renewed emphasis on skill development on the part of individuals.

Treaty of Lisbon: Democratic Deficit and EU Reform
The Reform Treaty or the Treaty of Lisbon, 2009, is an amending instrument for existing treaties, Treaty of European Union ("TEU) (also known as the Maastricht Treaty) and Treaty on Functioning of European Union ("TFEU") – the Treaty of Rome- which form the bedrock of the European Community's administrative and legislative functions. The historical background for the need for this "reform" treaty was the failure of the treaty to establish a European Constitution which had been voted out by referenda in France and Netherlands. Nonetheless it was felt amongst member states that they needed a compact that would perhaps more suitably express their desire to form a closer and more perfect union. In doing so the member states had to strike a balance between national aspirations and the aspirations of European unity. (Bonde, 2009) Added to this triangle was the need to sustain existing devolution. The complexity of the puzzle created by the various stakeholders required a sustained effort and that effort materialized in 2007 with the aforesaid treaty which was put in force in 2009. Dimensional Fund Advisors: Strategy, Philosophy & Performance
For over twenty-five years, DFA has walked a path between active money management, in which stock pickers use research to choose individual shares for a portfolio and the passive investment style of the Vanguard Group, that tracks stock-market indexes by buying whatever stocks are in them (Ossinger 2006, pp. R1). Apparently, such a style has proved more than successful for DFA, who has consistently made strides in the market since its years as a firm and continues on the path to future successes rooted in the basis and ideals of its initial development. Such a strategy should not be altered, and in maintaining this strategy and philosophy, DFA will likely continue to yield successful profit returns from its investments
