Global Leadership Competencies International organizations need transformation. Leaders in all sectors have a challenge to lead globally now and in the future. This requires an examination of current leaders of international organizations who have always been required to lead globally. Many lessons come out of these leaders because they have experience, influence, and motivation. The lessons will help others become successful global leaders and lead to success in the future. Leadership is the most important issue for managing people in organizations today, and developing leaders is a necessary human resource vision to achieving global success.

Some of the competencies global leaders should have include honesty, teamwork, and communication among many others. Owing to advances in education and technology, there is a risk of decline in the importance of national boundaries with time; also, a decline in cultural divergence is possible with time. International leaders have a moral obligation, or social responsibility to create a caring society. In order to become a global leader, one will need to contribute towards making a global impact, help people in the world through international work, and believe in international issues rather than working in their own national boundary (Marlene, 2012).

Research reveals that global leadership is a multifaceted happening and competencies associated with them are multifaceted. Leadership competencies are new challenges to all leaders aspiring to become global leaders. They must embrace the challenge because it will help them in making decisions in a global context. There exists many proposed global leadership competencies. The categories are business and organizational acumen competencies, managing people and relationships competencies and managing self-competencies.

Business organization acumen

This group addresses the need to understand business organizational realities and effective performance in business. Vision and strategic thinking are key competencies in this group. This means the ability to solve complex issues, giving details using intellectual intelligence, or the third way solutions in case the solutions fail. Global leaders should have competency in business shrewdness, meaning they can find creative solutions to some various organizational problems. Managing the community is another competency. This involves the ability to build partnerships and alliances, influence stakeholders, and community building. Lastly, competency in leading change is an important aspect. Global leaders should uphold change whether cultural change, or any type of change that is beneficial. They should act as catalysts in case of change (Mendenhall et. al., 2013).

Managing people and relationships competencies

This group aims towards people and interpersonal relationships and competencies that target the direct personal interaction. In this group, a global leader should have competency in communication skills, interpersonal skills, have value for people, and teamwork skills. Communication skills offer mutual conversations appreciating the diversification of cultures, cultural sensitivity, and cultural self-awareness. Global leaders should value others by understanding them, respecting, and trusting them. In terms of empowering others, it means that global leaders should encourage, share leadership, and energize other people.

Managing self-competency

This competency aims at a global leader, an inward to manage self and entails personal management, cognitive, and attitudinal management. Competencies in this group include resilience, inquisitiveness, flexibility, and global mindset. Resilience means that a global leader can manage their stress and emotions; they are energetic, and self-confident. Global leaders ought to uphold ethics and exhibit maturity. The globe needs more leaders but the competencies they should have not specified. This is because no leader can have all the competencies discussed. This calls for sharing of responsibilities in an organization. Leadership also will need to share in executive teams. This calls for collective responsibility and accountability in organizations and competencies for sharing leadership (Mendenhall et. al 2013).

Effective global leadership

For any leadership to be effective, there are numerous considerations that may determine the effectiveness of the leadership. The leader must take actions in maximizing the productivity and minimizing employee's stress. Leadership should focus on priorities. Owing to everyday activities often we tend to lose self-confidence, lack motivation and, as a result low, work output. This is because of bad news or heath issues. Thorough training may be time consuming; however, results resemble those often seen in a stable economy hence giving a business a competitive edge (HBSP, 2005).
A global leader should also use inspirational language to reassure the team that it may not be easy as it seems, but through hard work and teamwork, they would pull it to success as a team. The feeling of optimism shows that a leader has the ability to help the employee in achieving a goal (Harkins, Giber, Sobol, Tarquinio & Carter, 2005). In order for a leader to provide global leadership, one must also exhibit some characteristics that will enable him relate well with the other people in the workplace and the society. A global leader should be trustworthy. A global leader should not even at once compromise his or the organization integrity.

The leader should also be respectful and caring. A leader should demonstrate high regard for well being, worthiness, and dignity for all people. A leader should also show the desire to learn and communicate local language and culture. This helps in maintaining a good relationship with working mates. One should view the context at hand from various cultural views before coming up with conclusions, especially if working in a society with different culture rather than his own (HBSP, 2005). A global leader should have the skills to manage altitudes, values, and expectations in the issues of performance and results in the context of those he leads. One should work effectively to accomplish the goals of the organization.

Trust is an element that inspires the other teammates giving them mandate to set a performance bar between quality of life and success of the business. A leader should be persistence, emotional aware and resilient. Therefore, one should be able to control the emotions and stress by being able to sense, understand, and respond effectively in situations that are emotionally charged. A leader should have the ability to recognize and learn from different behavioral expectations required in different roles, in the society and act, according to the culture of the people. One should also learn to deal effectively with different expectations example power, altitudes, values, individualism, and competitiveness. This will give a leader more favorite and free atmosphere to work with people from different cultural backgrounds. A global leader should have the skills of anticipating opportunities, empowering people, appreciating cultural diversity, building teamwork, embracing change, and ensuring customer satisfaction. An effective global leader needs not only talent but also a lot of commitment and practice. One should be diligent, respectful, and honest on a continuous basis in order to be successful.

Bill Gates

There exist many global leaders today and in the past. Their impact in the world has left significant marks all over the world. One of them is William Henry gates. William Henry "Bill" Gates was born in the United States on 28 October 1955. Currently he is the chairperson of Microsoft Corporation. During his career at Microsoft, he worked as the chief software designer and chairperson of Microsoft. In addition, he is one of the best-known global leaders today, having introduced Microsoft to the world. Bill Gates was the world's richest person, a position he held for 15 years in a row. In February 2008, he was the third richest in the world (Go, 2009).

Bill Gates is married to Melinda French. He enjoys playing golf, bridge, and tennis. Bill Gates knows how to earn money and how to spend it well. He has donated money in huge sums to charitable organizations and various research organizations as well. One of the renowned foundations is the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which helps to cure diseases. This foundation formed after the two were trying to figure out what issue the world would be facing, and they landed on health. The foundation helps to cure diseases like Malaria. Bill Gates has shown some global leadership qualities that other leaders should emulate. He has given back to the community, empowered people, respected, and motivated others (Go, 2009). Leaders should not think about themselves only, they should try their best to help everyone in need. In addition, Bill was industrious. Microsoft started in a garage that is where it laid its foundation to where Microsoft is today. Bill Gates has engaged in energizing people through the field of programming. Bill Gates is a good example of a global leader because he finds time to earn money, and still have time to listen to other people's needs despite being very rich.

Incorporation of Competencies in today leadership approach

The competencies are so many and global leaders do not have the ability to embody all of the leadership competencies, though they are all important. However, every leader must incorporate the competencies they have in their daily leadership.…
