Incidences and Prevalence
According to data seen from 1994 through 1998 at the three university-based diabetes centers in Florida, 92 were classified with Type 2 diabetes. The proportion of patients increased over the five years from 9.4% in 1994 to 20.0% in 1998. From 1994 through 1998, there was a significant overall increase in the percentage of children referred with new-onset diabetes who were considered to have Type 2 diabetes[footnoteRef:1]. CDC carried out Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) surveys between 1995 to 1997, and 2005 to 2007 for examining state-specific changes and assessing geographic distribution of diabetes. During 2005 to 2007, incidence of diabetes ranged from 5.0 to 12.8 per 1,000 persons among 40 states, the District of Columbia, and two territories. The greatest incidence was observed in the South and Puerto Rico. Additionally, among thirty three states, the age-adjusted incidence of diabetes increased from the previous 4.8 to 9.1 per 1,000 in 2005 to 2007.
