Resolving Technical Problems
Sometimes, psychological issues progress to the point where they have a physical effect, and there are other purely biological issues that can cause some technical problems when it comes to sex. The Penners do not ignore these, of course, but rather suggest ways that comfortable married couples can work together to overcome these difficulties. They stress that it is important for an individual experiencing these problems to become comfortable with their own bodies and with whatever negative development has arisen, and again this demonstrates the need for healthy sexuality to take place within the trust and comfort that a marriage bed provides. As long as two committed partners are willing to work together, these problems can be surmounted.
What is most noticeable about the way in which the Penners approach and address these issues is the absolute ease and comfort with which very delicate and often very explicit topics are dealt with. Throughout the book, but especially in this section, their tone is that which they are attempting to have their readers emulate -- it is calm, encouraging, accepting, and completely non-judgmental. In explaining the reasons behind many common "technical" sexual problems that may be encountered, the Penners make it clear that each of these dysfunctions is common and ordinary, if not exactly normative. The Penners do an excellent job of describing how the Bible discusses sexuality, and of demonstrating how it is an important aspect of a healthy Christian marriage. Rather than simply lecturing readers on what sexuality means from a Biblical and Christian perspective, however, Clifford and Joyce Penner lead the reader on an exploration of their own sexuality, and how it relates to their own Christianity. This makes the book both universal and deeply personal, and an effective means of learning about sexuality fro any Christian.
