HPV is arguably the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States, with an estimated 24 million active cases and 5.5 million new cases each year. Most people contract a strain of HPV that is suppressed by the immune system with no medical intervention. Other HPV strains cause troublesome genital wads. An even smaller number of HPV strains lead to cervical cancer, which kills around 4,800 women a year -- more than the number of women who die of AIDS." Those two HPV strains cause 70% of cervical cancers.Study participants were sexually active women between 16 and 26 who were not infected with HPV strains 16 and 18 at the start of the study. Half of the women in the study received three doses of Gardasil over six months. The other half were administered a dummy shot.By the end of the research, no cases of cervical cancer or precancerous lesions were observed among the vaccinated women, compared with 21 cases in the placebo group."

In this population (vaccine = 2,240 versus placebo = 2,258), the vaccine prevented 100% of HPV6/11/16/18-related cervical lesions of any grade.
